Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-11-05  Andrew Chapman: Remarkable position after 54..Nf4. White can't move his rook off the f file because of Rh5+ followed by Ne2+ and Rh1. Black is about to advance his a pawn. Hence the desperado Nd4+.

plang: In Lochte-Popovic Belgrade 2001 White had played 12 Bg5 and Black had gone on to win; 12 Nce5 was new. Gelfand was sceptical of 16 Bd2?! recommending 16 c4 as an improvement. 31 b4?! was apparently played to prevent ..Nc5 but 31 Rd1 or 31 Nd2 would have been more solid. 34 fxe..Rxg3 35 exf..Nf4 would have favored Black. Black missed 41..Nf4+ 42 Kf2..Rg2+ 43 Ke3..Nd5+ 44 Ke4..Rxd2 with a winning position. 50 Re7 would have been a stronger defense. 65 Nd4? was the losing move due to the White king being in the corner; 65 Kg1 or 65 Kh2 would have drawn: ie. 65 Kh2..a6 66 Rf8..a5 69 Rf7!.
