plang: 8 Bd3 is considered to be a drawing line; once 8 Bb5 was played Shirov decided to be more ambitious. Although White had had some success taking the gambit pawn with 10 Bxc6?! and 11 Qxa7?! Shirov was confident that Black had more than sufficient compensation. 13 Kd2?! had been played with success once before in an obscure 1999 game in Sweden; Shirov felt that White could instead play 13 Rd1..Bc4 14 Nb5 with approximate equality. In the earlier game 13..Bc4 had been played; Shirov found the new move 13..b6! (presumably at the board) which was voted the 4th best opening novelty in Informant 92. White was lost after after 14 Qa7?; Shirov recommended instead 14 Qa4..b5 15 Qa5..Bc4 16 Nxb5..Bxb5 17 Qxb5..Rb6 18 Qd3..Rxb2+ 19 Ke1..Nf6 with some edge for Black. 16 a3..Bxc3 17 Rxc3..Rxc3 18 bxc..Qc4 would have left Black with a winning attack (note that Shirov's 15..Bb5! prevents the response 19 Qxd7+ which would have been effective against 15..Ba6).

Voted the 6th best game in Informant 92.
