Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-22-04  MoonlitKnight: An incredibly long and complex game. I was watching some strong junior players analyze the game on a board in the hotel lobby, where there was a large screen showing the game live. Already before move 70, they had spotted the winning idea with Qf5 to put black in zugzwang. There was some tension as to whether or not Magnus would find the technique to complete this plan. At white's 82nd - after 7 hours of play - I walked into the playing hall, saw Magnus play the correct moves, went back to the lobby and reported that the zugzwang was achieved. A spontaneous clapping and cheering burst out, as Magnus had taken joint first place in the championship.
Aug-23-04  acirce: The computer tells us 31..h6 was winning but the lines are complicated and Lie had little chance of figuring it all out in the time trouble I seem to recall that he was having.
Sep-20-05  Marco65: I'm missing something. Why not 86.Qxa4 winning immediately? Maybe the score is wrong
Apr-12-12  King Sacrificer: Wow, what a grab fest. Early Queen sac makes evaluating the positions very hard. No surprise game went on for 7 hours.
Apr-12-12  PeaceRequiresAnarchy: Why not 86.Qxa4 indeed?
Mar-07-16  ndg2: Game score wrong or Magnus was indeed tired. 86. Qxa4 wins on the spot.
