Aug-25-04  mack: A blunder from our resident GM here - but we have to look at what options there are after the sneaky 31.Qd1! Black's men are in such a tangle that it's tricky to find one; perhaps someone more intelligent than me could shine light on whether or not this is a direct result of the choice of the cramping Benoni.

I've never heard of Kick Langeweg before, I only came across this game when I pressed the 'Random' button.

By the way, the movement of white's knight in this game reminds of a certain Fischer masterpiece, where he charges his knight down the board, being extremely active, and then swapping it for an inactive bishop.

ray keene: black is probably ok out of the opening but it requires finesse-this was one of the games which made me think the modern benoni was not going to be my main defence against 1d4 for ever!
Oct-07-09  birthtimes: A few interesting games have followed the line 11...Nbd7 12. Qc2 c4.
Oct-07-09  birthtimes: Another interesting line is 12...Nbd7 13. a4 b4 14. Nd1 Re8 15. Ne3 b3 16. Qb1 Qc7?!

I loved the Benoni formations - still do. They offer both tactical and strategic depth. I have 22 books on the Benoni but I just could never make it work for me. I have had some luck with the Franco-Benoni, delaying ...Nf6, alternately placing it.

Defences where Black has potential play on either wing seems the way to go - Benoni, Kan Sicilian, Dutch, Robatsch, Nimzo-Petrosian style French...

Oct-07-09  birthtimes: Liu Wenzhe has a nice book out with a few, yet very much in-depth, looks at some Benoni's from the Black side, entitled "The Chinese School of Chess; The unique approach, training methods and secrets."
