Benzol: It would have been interesting if this game had continued.

Chessical: Did Sarapu actually have a win? It looks like it at first, but it keeps slipping away. The position is extremely complicated; Sarapu must always be aware that Torre will have back rank threats against his K.

<41.Qxg4+ sealed> Kh8

(a). <42.h4> Be2 43.Qxe2 Rxc1+ 44.Kg2 Rxc3 45.Qxa6 Bxh4 46.Qa4 Bf6 47.Qg4; and how can White make progress?

(b). <42.Qh5+> Kg8 43.Qg6+ Kh8 44.Kg1 Bd3 45.Kf2 Rxc1 46.Qh6+ Kg8 47.Qxc1 Bxf5 48.Qa1 Bxe6 49.Qxa6 Bxc3 50.Qa8+ Kf7 51.Qf3+ Bf6 52.h4; and Black has 2B+2P with three connected passed pawns against Q+P.

This is a fascinating position.

Chessical: I have kept going backwards along the score to find a win for Sarapu, perhaps instead of <34.Qg6+>, he could have taken the R on a4 and won:

<34.Qxa4> cxb2 35.Qxg4+ Kh8 36.Bxb2 Bxb2 37.Qf4 Bb5 38.Qxh6+ Kg8 39.Qg6+ Bg7 40.Qf7+ Kh8 41.Qxe7

Benzol: <Chessical> What would Black play after 41.Qxg4 Kh8 (not 41...Kf8; 42.Bh6+ etc);42.Qf4 threatening the Black bishop on f1? Sarapu has winning chances but as you say it's fascinating and very complicated.

Chessical: <Benzol> This must have been so frustrating for Sarapu. It is a gut feeling that there should be a win for Sarapu at this stage, but where has it gone?

41.Qxg4+ Kh8 <42.Qf4> Bh3 43.Qh6+ Kg8 44.Qxh3 Rxc1+; and it is still a hard struggle struggle ahead.

Jun-06-04  maoam: Surely 12. ...Ne8 is a blunder; after 13. exf6 how can black regain his lost piece?

Chessical: <Maoam> Unfortunately, <40.Bg5> loses immediately to 40..Bh3. The back rank threats keep Torre alive.
Jun-06-04  maoam: Yeah, I set up the position incorrectly on my chess set, and I just realised my mistake.

Chessical: <Maoam> The <Chessgames.com> score is incorrect, the 12th move should be 12...Nfe8.
Jun-06-04  maoam: Lol, I see.

Benzol: <Chessical> I believe you are correct. However, the fault is not <chessgames.com> but mine. The gamescore I uploaded this game from just states that Black's 12th move is Ne8 without specifying which knight and I didn't play through the game on a small set to check for errors. I'm not sure I would have noticed it anyway. lol. Hopefully <chessgames.com> will correct the fault.

Oct-03-11  wordfunph: story behind this game..

1978 Buenos Aires Chess Olympiad:

In the last round, New Zealand's Ortvin Sarapu had his plane ticket booked and may miss his flight. He agreed a draw in a winning position versus Philippines' GM Eugenio Torre.
