plang: 11..cxd isn't played that often as it gives White the option of developing the queens knight on c3. In game 2 of their 4th round match in the 2001 World Championship tournament in Moscow Ponomariov played 15..Nxe4 against Morozovich and White went on to win; here Black tried 15..Nh5 which had been played once before in the short draw Ciocaltea-Smejkal 1974 Halle. Grischuk said that 16 a4!? was an attempt to avoid preparation by his opponent but it hampered his own queenside development after 16..b4. Black was defending well until the blunder 20..Nc5?; better was 20..a5! 21 Nb5..Qd8 22 Ba3..Nxd3 23 Qxd3..Nc5 24 Bxc5..fxe 25 Rxe4..Rxc5 26 Nxd6..Bxd5 27 Nb7!..Bxb7 28 Qxd8..Rxd8 29 Rxb7 with some advantage for White. 21..dxc would have been better though after 22 Bc4 White would have had a big edge.
