Pawn and Two: Thomas had good drawing chances had he played either 38.Rxe5 or 39.Rxe4.

After 38.Rxe5 Rxf3 39.Kb2 Rf2+ 40.Bc2 Ra6 41.Rxa6 Nd3+ 42.Kb1 Rf1+ 43.Ka2 Nxe5, Fritz gives an evaluation of (-.32) (16 ply) 44.g5 Rg1 45.Ra4.

Also, after 39.Rxe4 Rxf3 (-.37) (18 ply) 40.Kb2 Rf2+ 41.Bc2 Ra5 42.Rdd4, White has good drawing chances.

After Thomas's 40.Bc2?, it was quickly over. Certainly Black has the advantage, but is it enough to win? What is the winning process if White plays 40.Rd1? A possible continuation could be 40...Rhh2 41.c5 Ne2+ 42.Rxe2 Rhxe2 43.c6.

Jan-26-09  whiteshark: 19.Bg5 Be7 20.0-0-0 was potentially stronger.
