Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-31-18  Retireborn: Another interesting last round game from the BSG Berlin tournament.

In 1928 Reti revived his interest in 1.e4, which he played in a dozen or so tournament games, but his results with it were rather mixed.

It's difficult to say whether his 10.Qe2 is any better than the standard 10.c3, but he seems to have no advantage until Lajos makes the wrong recapture with 22...Bxa5? (22...Rxa5 seems to be OK.) Then White can play 23.Nf1! Bf7 24.Qe5 Bg6 25.Qe7 Qxe7 26.Rxe7 and with the twin threats of Rxg7+ and Bb6 winning a piece, the endgame is very favourable for him.

Instead Reti cannot resist the temptation to be "brilliant" with 23.Nc4? probably overlooking the move 25...c5. After 26.Bxc5 Steiner has the chance to exploit the back rank weakness and win a piece with 26...Bb4!! Sadly he misses this and plays the materialistic 26...Bxc3, which would allow White to escape with 27.Rd1! since then 27...Bxb2 28.Bxf8 is not clear at all.

But Reti blunders again with 27.Rea6; the piece is saved, but his b-pawn falls and justice is done.
