Apr-22-04  rndapology: Hmm...what is this? Jeff Sarwer is if I recall the guy who played against waitkin in that movie and also in real life. Is this an authentic game, 1985 date is likely? Also, who is Sam Sloan, I know he has some home page ishipress.com, but anybody know anything else?
Jun-10-04  samsloan: Yes. This is one and the same person as THE Jeff Sarwer who was depicted as playing against Josh Waitzkin in the climatic game in the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer". And yes, this game was played at the Manhattan Chess Club in 1985. The date is correct. Sam Sloan
Apr-14-06  NietzschesKnights: In Jeff's own words: "You have got to be kidding me."

Please tell me this was a blitz game.

Apr-14-06  Caissanist: Well, keep in mind that Sarwer would have been about 8 when this game was played. For most eight-year-olds getting to move 17 before you blunder your first piece is pretty darn good.
Nov-20-06  RonB52734: Sam Sloan is now a member of the executive board of USCF, after several years of trying. And for reasons including his website(s), he's somewhat controversial.

jeff sarwer: Hello, anybody look at the title?
Manhattan insanity open? Not only was I 8, but this game happened at around 5 am after being up all night. If I remember this was the round after Michael Rohde blundered a Knight to me then won it back :)

jeff sarwer: sorry, I was actually 6 years old going on 7 at the time. :) Lucky me staying up all night without bedtimes! Although sometimes without a bed. :(
Oct-29-07  NietzschesKnights: So I was right, then: this was not a focused tournament game. The reason for my little outburst is that Jeff and Josh were my chess heroes when I was younger, and I suppose I don't like to see them lose so badly.

Anyway, Jeff, it's nice to see that you are doing well and still playing strong chess, in spite of what some of the popular media wanted us to believe about you. Welcome back :-)

Apr-27-09  TheTamale: If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, Sam Sloan is the author of one of the greatest web sites of all time. It was once called www.anushka.com (named after his daughter); now that link takes you to some cheesy real estate site. Neither is www.samsloan.com currently an active URL. Alas, a perfunctory google search doesn't bring up any active equivalents of his old, super-eclectic web page either. A shame. It was hours of good & zany reading!
