Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-29-03  bishop: Zhong responds to the wing attack 9...g5 with the central counter 10.d4! The answer to 11...gxf3 is 12.Qxf3 and if say 12...Bg7 then 13.Qg3 followed by 14.dxe5 and then the advance of the f-Pawn will finish Black off.
Jan-30-03  ughaibu: I guess 25. ... Qf2 loses to Qe6 and Qg8. It looks as if black should have had something?

plang: 5..Be7 had been very rarely played prior to this game though in the years after it did achieve some popularity; already 6 Nc3 was new. 9..g5!? was very sharp; 9..b6,for instance, would have been more solid. White spent almost half an hour on 10 d4! after which the players had each used almost an hour. Had White played 11 Nxe5?!..Qxd4 12 Nd3..Qxc3 13 Bb2..Qxb2 14 Nxb2..Bxb2 15 Rad1 Black would have had some advantage. 11..gxf 12 Qxf3..Bg7 13 dxe..Qc8 14 Qg3..Ng6 15 f4 would have been very strong for White. After 13..Ng6? Black was lost; necessary was 13..g3! when after 14 Rxd4..Qxd4 15 Bb2..gxf+ 16 Kh1..Qd6 17 Bxh8..0-0-0 18 Bf6 the position would have been unclear. Black may have missed the prophylactic 17 Rd3! which effectively blunted the Black attack. White had to be careful to avoid 23 Rd2..Rdg8 24 Rfd1?..Rg1+ 25 Rxg1..Rxg1+ 26 Kxg1..Qe1#.

Voted the 8th best game of Informant 86 - Zhang Zhong scored 11-2 in the 14 player category 11 event to win by a whopping 3 points easily qualifying for the 2004 A-section.
