Jan-18-03  refutor: 4. ... Bd7 rewards white for the outlandish move 4.g4?!. black's best play here (in my opinion, and others share it) is to force white to overextend himself with something along the lines of 4. ... Be4 5.f3 Bg6 etc. incidentally, NCO gives 4. ... Bd7 5.c4 h5 6.gxh5 Bf5 7.Nc3 e6 8.Nge2 Bg4 9.Qb3 Qb6 as unclear but i'd prefer the white side of that as well
Jan-18-03  drukenknight: I agree I have seen 4...Be4 played at blitz and there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it, but the my opening book doesnt considere it either. Maybe there is a trap in there somewhere, but it would be nice to know what that is since most of my opponents will play 4...Be4 w/o even thinking about it.
Jan-19-03  refutor: <maybe there is a trap in there somewhere>

in my book on the caro-kann advance by IM byron jacobs he comments that

"it is appropriate to note here that 4.g4 does not offer any advantage; e.g. 4. ... Be4 (to block the d1-h5 diagonal) 5.f3 Bg6 6.h4 h5 7.e6 Qd6 8.exf7+ Bxf7 (Alekhine) or 7.Bd3 Bxd3 8.Qxd3 e6 and Black has no problems"

Obviously it is still a tricky line for Black, but I think that Be4 fights for an advantage much more than the tempo losing ...Bd7 does.

In my other book "Caro-Kann Defence : Advance Variation (B12-CK4)" (yes i used to play the caro-kann and am well equipped book-wise on it, speaking of which if anyone can tell me where i can acquire a copy of Kasparov's book on the 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5 line from the early 80s please let me know) they just go a little furhter and add that after 7.BD3 Bxd3 8.Qxd3 e6 9.g5 Ne7 it is =+. In my opinion the key move in that line is 6. ... h5, (as opposed to ...h6) because if White can get his pawn to h5 it's almost always bad news...i've learned from experience.

hope this helps you out a little bit

Jan-23-03  drukenknight: thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to play these out. Its too damn cold here maryland to do anything. getting 10 below w/ windchill, ugh.
Jan-23-03  drukenknight: is 14...Rxg6 any better?
Jan-24-03  Sarimanok: 4...Be4 is very good equalizer. If 4...Be4 5.f3 Bg6 6.h4 h5 7.Bd3 Bxd3 8.Qxd3 e6 9.g5 gives white an advantange in space but black remains solid.

DEF: Following the discussion of possible black 4th moves, the immediate 4... Bg6 currently seems to be the most popular, with Be4 as second choice.
Nov-04-07  sallom89: capturing the g7 pawn would create a passed pawn 0.0
