Honza Cervenka: Nimzo would be happy with such a blockade on c5 and d4. On the other hand, Stern's position would not have been so glorious if Minckwitz would have played 14...c5! instead of superficial 14...0-0.
Dec-09-13  thomastonk: There is a problem with this game and the result: Stern lost by exceeding the time limit at 20.♖c1, and so 0-1 became the official result. The unofficial continuation - given here - ended opposite.
Aug-01-15  zanzibar: To elaborate a little on <thomastonk>'s comment...

First, Stern withdrew to join the war effort, therefore all of his games were in practice nullified with regards to the official tournament results.

(Actually, the tournament left him in the xtab, but recorded all his games as losses. Modern practice would just drop him, officially.)

Next, <The Field> 1870-09-24 has the game, with this commentary:

<In deliberating upon his 20th move Mr. Stern unfortunately exceeded his allotted time, and thereby forfeited the game. The players, however, agreed to finish it, and it continued as follows...>

http://www.chessarch.com/excavation...

The time control was 20 moves in 2 hours, and was one of the first major tournaments to utilize clocks (perhaps was the first to actually enforce time control forfeits - or try to, see the Paulsen -- de Vere game(?)).

Aug-01-15  thomastonk: <z: First, Stern withdrew to join the war effort, ..>

Are you sure? He played the first 4 rounds of the tournament, and this game is from round 2. Later he left the tournament, because he was a reservist of the Bavarian army.

Aug-01-15  zanzibar: <tt> I'm not sure what the issue is...

Perhaps you could elaborate a little?

After all, as you yourself say - he left, and became a reservist. Seems to say the same, with slightly different phraseology.

Aug-02-15  thomastonk: <z: I'm not sure what the issue is... Perhaps you could elaborate a little?>

Yes, of course. On Dec-09-13 I stressed the following problem. Stern exceeded the time limit and lost: 0-1 after 20 moves was the official result. Both men agreed to continue the game, but this had a private, unofficial character. The result was 1-0 after 31 moves, and this unofficial version of the game belonged on Dec-09-13 and still belongs to Baden-Baden (1870)!

This was the problem I pointed to, and it exists without Stern's later withdrawel. But, of course, I admit that a final solution could take the withdrawel into account.

More on this subject on the tournament page, because this game is not the only case.

Jan-07-16  zanzibar: Just a follow up comment - after rereading <thomastonk>'s comment.

There's a <Field> article with an English write-up of the rules:

http://www.chessarch.com/excavation...

I call your attention to rule #3:

<If any one game last less than four hours the players shall commence another at 4pm, which shall also be finished at a sitting>

I presume this allowed for two games between some of Stern's opponents to be completed whereas other opponents played none.

(I think I didn't immediately understand what you meant by round 2)

This rule means the tournament was played outside our normal round scheduling numbering.
