plang: Game 2 of their sixth round match in the World Championship tournament. Short's win evened the match and forced tie-breaks which were won by Adams who was then defeated by Anand in the finals. 11 a3 was new; 11 Nbd2 was the most frequently played move. Short's relatively slow set-up motivated Adams to sacrifice a pawn with 13..d5!?. Seirawan expected 18..Qd6 19 a4..Rad8 20 axb..axb when Black is OK. After the clever 20 Ra2 Short felt that Adams should have played 20..Qf6 21 cxb..Qf4 22 g3..Qxb4 with an interesting game. After 20..Ra7? Short started to take control. 27 Rc4 wasn't possible due to 27..Qxd5. After 37..a5 Seirawan noted that if the Black pawn was on b6 rather than b4 and if the rook was blockading the d pawn rather than the queen then Black would have had reasonable defensive chances. If 39..Qxf4 40 gxf..Rd7 41 d6..Kg7
42 Rd5..Kf6 43 Rxa5..Rxd6 44 Rb5..Rd4
45 a5 wins for White.
