Sneaky: I used to play this line as Black but gave it up because after we "exchange forks" and I play 15. ...Nxa1 that knight was trapped while Black's was not.

But 15. ...Nxe3 breathes new life into this position! Very interesting. I wonder if it's sound?

Sneaky: GM Van Der Weil won this line, because he found an improvement.

Instead of 18. Rhe1, which looks like a good sensible move, Van Der Weil brought his knight back into the action and played 18. Nc7. (He played Rhe1 on the next move)

Van der Wiel vs B Carlier, 1980

My rating is under 2000, so I don't think I have to worry about meeting opponents over the board who know about the 18th move of an obscure pawn sacrifice sideline of the Lowenthal variation of the Sicilian.

Aug-12-02  refutor: a possible improvement given in "chess openings for the average player" by harding and barden gives 13.Rc1! Bg4 14.Qd3 Qxd3 15.Bxd3 Rd8 16.h3 Bc8 17.f4! from liberzon-frankzoni, biel 1980 (which isn't in the database here) and they comment "white will soon play O-O after which his two bishops support his queenside pawn majority". this position looks better for white
Jun-19-06  vizir: in fact

13.Nxa8
is the best move :-)

Jan-19-08  ChessDude33: <vizir> 13. Nxa8 Nxc2+ 14. Kd2 Nxe3 Is good for black I believe.
