Aug-13-03  ksadler: For those who are interested, this game is annotated at http://www.chesscafe.com/text/yaz07...
Mar-04-04  Everett: I don't like 6...0-0 at all. 6...Ngd7 followed by ...Nf8 ...h5 and ...Ng6 if white castles kingside.
Mar-04-04  TrueFiendish: How about if 6...Nbd7 7.h4 Nf8 8.h5? The knight manouvre just seems a little slow.
Mar-12-04  Everett: Centers closed. 7.h4 h5 before Nf8. Black can't afford to give up space all over the board. Black can then see if f4 or g4 are now available for occupation. My guess would be g4, as h4 will have to be defended by g3, since blacks Q and B are already lined up to attack it. Rook lift on the K-side for black to follow, especially if white tries to keep Black out of g4 as well with f3.
Apr-18-04  badbadLeroyBrown: 21....Ne8 looks like the decisive blunder to me, allowing white a powerful rook on the 7th rank after the forced Queen trade. 21...Kg8 is far superior and leads to an uncomfortable, but possible, draw.

I like Yasser, but his analyis was pretty sloppy in the chesscafe article. First of all his failure to comment about how horrible 21...Ne8 was (but he brags that 22.Qf7 forces the queen trade "in the nick of time"), secondly his failure to praise his move Rxd7. True it's not a deep tactic, but it's a move that forces the win and deserves a "!".

Apr-19-04  TrueFiendish: It's a pretty obvious liquidating manouvre--I'm not sure that it should have a "!" thrown at it.
Nov-08-11  King Death: If Black tries 21...Kg8 22.Ne4 should be a good answer. Black's position is very passive, and I'm sure Ivanov understood that well. I would hate to play a position like that against a grandmaster, and I did.

plang: Both Christiansen and Fedorowicz questioned the choice of the Czech Benoni against Seirawan who loves this type of closed position. 14..Nxd5 worked out in White's favor with control of e4 but White already had initiative on the kingside with Black having little counterplay. 17..Bd7 would have given Black better chances of contesting the f-file. 21..Kg8 22 Ne4..Ne8 23 Ng5! threatening Nxh7 would have been strong for White. 26..Bxb5 would have avoided White's mini combination but after 27 Bxb5..axb 28 g5 Black would have been paralyzed.
