  Honza Cervenka: 12...Bd4+ looks like a loss of time but it is not easy to find any reasonable continuation for black. For example, 12...Qb6+ 13.Kh1 Be6 14.fxe5+ Ke8 is not satisfactory for 15.Be3! Qxe3 16.Bxe6 Rd8 17.Qg4 Qh6 18.Qf5 Rd4 19.Bg8! and white wins. 14...Ke7!? 15.Ba3+ Ke8 is probably an improvement for black but still white has strong attack: 16.Bc5 Qxc5 17.Bxe6 Bd4 18.c3 Qxe5 19.Bf7+ Ke7 20.cxd4 Qxb5 21.Nc3 etc.

14...Bg4 was a mistake in calculation but Paulsen as well as his opponent did not notice that after 15.exf6 Bxd1 16.f7+ Kd7 17.Rxd1 black cannot avoid loss of material.

Later Paulsen missed 19.Ba3+! which would have won the game immediately (19...Nxa3 20.Qxe5+ Kd8 21.Qxg7 etc.)

Jun-20-11  JoergWalter: <Honza Cervenka> your annotations on these old games are very helpful. What do you think about 6. ... Qf6? There are no similar games in this database. 6...Nh6 (Max Lange) or 6...Qg5 (Hirschbach) are more common.
