Mar-05-04  BeautyInChess: I'm surprised that no one has commented on this thrashing of a game. Morphy parries the opening threats and then puts a hurt on. When I see Morphy play 31. ... Ne4 I know the terror is about to begin. I was reminded of the line from the Matrix by Mr. Smith. "That is the sound of inevitability, Mr. Anderson."
Jul-15-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: Yes, excellent game. The attack was set up by good positional play by Morphy, particularly pressure against the isolated pawn that tied down white's pieces.
Aug-04-07  sanyas: Pity that the great Paul Morphy missed 15...♘xe5 16.dxe5 ♘f4, eg. 17.♕f3 ♕h4 18.♕b3 ♗c2 19.♕c3 ♕g5 20.♖ae1 ♖ad8 21.♗c1 ♗g6 22.♖d1 ♕h4 23.♖fe1 ♖fe8 24.♕b3 ♗d4 25.♕f3 ♘h5 26.e6 fxe6 27.♖xe6 ♗xf2+ 28.♔xf2 ♕xc4 29.♖xe8+ ♖xe8 30.♘xh5 ♕h4+. Several other inexplicable decisions such as not taking the pawn on move 19. Nothing remotely positional about this win, just a horrific example of going wrong with the Evans gambit.
Sep-07-08  heuristic: <Morphy missed 15...Nxe5 16.dxe5 Nf4> but 16...Nf4 17.Qg4 Nd3 18.Bc3 seems to equalize.
however, 16...c6 17.Qg4 Qe7 18.Rac1 keeps the pressure on WHT

<a horrific example of going wrong with the Evans gambit> the above comments don't indicate any "wrong" moves.
i see 2-3 weak moves that allowed "good positional play"

11.h3 instead of a pawn push
11.d5 Ne5 12.exd5 Nxd5 13.Ne4 Bf5
or 11.e5 Nh5 12.d5 Na5 13.exd6 Qxd6

17.Ba3 moves the R to e8 (which is better)
i7.Qc2 Na5 18.Be2 Qd5 19.Bf3 Qc4
or 17.Ne2 Re8 18.Qa4 a6 19.Rad1 Qd6

19.Rad1 doesn't do much
19.Bb5 Qxd4 20.Bxc6 bxc6 21.Rac1 Rab8
or 19.Bc5 Na5 20.Qc2 Nxc4 21.Qxc4 c6 seem better
