Jul-07-04  rodrigochaves: why not 6.Bb5 dxe4 7.Nxe5 or 7.Bxc6+ bxc6 8.Nxe5 ? i think its a child question but i have to make it.:)

  tpstar: <rodrigochaves> I think it's a great question! This position can be reached after the Four Knights Opening (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bc4?!) or the Two Knights Defense (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Nc3?!). I would mark both fourth moves as "?!" since Black equalizes with the Fork Trick = 4 ... Nxe4! because 5. Nxe4 d5 regains the piece with an open game for Black. Note the least successful strategy for White is the desperado line 5. Bxf7+ Kxf7 6. Nxe4 d5 7. Neg5+ Kg8 or 7. Ng3 e4 and Black has the Two Bishops on an open board. More common is 5. Nxe4 d5 6. Bb5 dxe4 7. Nxe5 like you suggested, then 7 ... Qd5 is good for Black. If White intended Bb5, correct was 4. Bb5 instead of 4. Bc4?! like the example game. Review this one = L Schmidt vs Lasker, 1893 for starters. Ciao.
Jul-08-04  rodrigochaves: tpstar:thank you for the explanation. i think i will make more questions in this site now!

  FSR: <tpstar> 7...Qd5 indeed favors Black, but even better is 7...Qg5, e.g. 8.d4 Qxg2 9.Rf1 Bd6 10.Nxc6 a6 11.Ba4 O-O 12.Ne5 Bxe5 13.dxe5 Bg4 14.f3 exf3 15.Qd2 f2+ 16.Qxf2 Qe4+ 17.Qe3 Qxa4 18.Rf4 Qd7 19.Qd4 Rad8 20.Qxd7 Bxd7 (-1.28 Komodo 9).
