gezafan: This is one of the first examples of the Capablanca variation.

It may have been fairly new to Zuckertort. Z plays too aggressively and pays the price.

Jan-24-12  optimal play: Emmanuel Schiffers employs the Capablanca freeing manoeuvre a year before Capablanca's birth! It seems that Capablanca didn't play this line until Janowski vs Capablanca, 1924 Of course he subsequently used it in a number of games against Alekhine in their 1927 World Championship Match, which I guess earned him naming rights.

<Z plays too aggressively and pays the price.> I agree. After 24...exd5 25.exf5 Rxe1+ 26.Kxe1 Re8+ 27.Kf1 Qe7 Schiffers wrests control, Zukertort's attack dissipates, and White is left with a lost end-game.
