Jun-08-08  Bobsterman3000: RIP Alex Wojtkiewicz it's a shame that you died at such a young age. I used to watch a lot of your games late night on playchess.com

Jun-08-08  der623: Because of the lack of open lines, d5 seems to suggest itself. So what's next? If Black takes the d5 pawn with the c pawn, Qe8+ forces Nf8 which exposes the rook on a4. If Black takes with the e pawn, Bg4 nets the knight.

Sneaky: OK I admit it, this puzzle is over my head.
Jun-08-08  talfan: if black takes with e-pawn Bg4 is not good because of Rxg4, but Bxd5 pointing at f7 is very strong ( if 23...cxd5 then 24.Qe8 Nf8 25. Qxa4 ). Quite easy for a sunday btw.

al wazir: I got the first move right.

I saw that after 22...cxd5 23. Bxd5 exd5 24. Qe8+ Nf8 25. Qxh4, white has ♖ vs. ♗+♙. I would have played it OTB without any qualms too, since white risks nothing. But after 22...Rd4 I would have played 23. dxe6 fxe6 24. Qxe6+ Kf8/Kh8 25. Ra1. I dunno if that wins.

Will you give me half a point?

Jun-08-08  dzechiel: White to move (22?). Black is up a pawn. "Insane."

Goodness. It's not like white has a lot of moves to choose from here, material is down to three pieces and five pawns. Of course white has one very forcing move, 22 Qe8+ which forces 22...Nf8, but I think that the THREAT of that move should be saved.

The one move that continues to attract my eye is:

22 Rc1

But the more I look at it, the less I like it. I'm thinking something like

22...Rxd4 23 Bxc6 bxc6 24 Qe8+ Nf8 25 Rxc6

but then black could play 25...Qd5 and I think he would be in good shape.

What else is there? Aha! Now I see an idea! I'm sure this is it!

22 d5!

This pawn cannot easily be captured! The key is th a4-e8 diagonal. If black plays 22...cxd5 then 23 Qe8+ forces 23...Nf8 24 Qxa4 picking up the rook.

So how does black respond? He can ignore the pawn and return to material equality. Or he can try

22...exd5 23 Bxd5

Once again black can't take with the c-pawn or he goes down an exchange after 23...cxd5 24 Qe8+ Nf8 25 Qxa4.

Now black is starting to hurt. White is threatening 24 Qxf7+ Kh8 25 Qg8#. Black can't move the knight without losing the queen, how to put up the best defence?

It seems that black needs to defend his back rank with either the queen or the rook. There are advantages to both. If black plays 23...Ra8, then these checks of Qe8+ no longer indirectly attack the rook. If black plays 23...Qc8, then black is free to move the knight without putting the queen en prise.

I'm thinking the move must be

23...Qc8

because after 23...Ra8 I think white can play 24 Bxf7+ Kh8 25 Be8 (threatening to win the knight) 25...Rd8 26 Rd1 and black is going down a piece.

OK, what's next? Hey, I think this is almost over!

24 Bxf7+ Kh8 25 Rd1

attacking the knight for a second time and I don't think it has anywhere good to go. After

25...Nf8 26 Rd8

looks like a killer.

That's all the time I'm gonna spend on this. Time to check.

For those of you out there that have a spiritual side, my oldest boy (21 years) had his gallbladder removed yesterday but still needs an additional procedure to remove gallstones that have lodged in the liver bile duct, and I know he would appreciate your prayers. Thanks, Dave Zechiel.

Jun-08-08  dzechiel: Black managed a more interesting defence that the prosaic one I provided for him. A very pretty ending.

al wazir: Surely 23...h6 would have been better for black than 23...Qc8.
Jun-08-08  TrueBlue: d4 was obvious, threatening

22. d5 exd5 23. Qe8+ Nf8 24. Bxd5

22 .. Rd4 was just weird, didn't consider it. And as the game shows, it doesn't work.

Best play should be something like:
22. d5 Qc8 23. dxe6 Ne5 24. Rd1 Ra8 25. exf7+
Nxf7 26. Rd7 Qf8 27. Rxb7 Nd8

Jun-08-08  lost in space: As this is an insane puzzle I will not spend too much time on it. There is only one active move for white: 22. d5. So I will only have a look to this move.

22...exd5 (cxd5 is loosing the ♖a4 after ♕e8+ ♘f8) 23. ♗xd5 (threat: ♕xf7 with mate on g8) Options:
A: 23..cxd5 24 ♕e8+ ♘f8 24. ♕xa5

B: 23... ♕c8 24. ♗xf7+ ♔h8 25. ♖d1 and the ♘d7 is gone

C. ♖a8 24. ♗xf7 ♔h8 25. ♖d1 ♖d8 26. ♗e6 with the same result.

The solution is not not insane?! Must have overlooked a good defense for Black.

Jun-08-08  NewLine: Totally Insane. How do they do that?
Jun-08-08  sfm: Dzechiel, I give your son my best hopes and wishes.

Sneaky: <Sneaky: OK I admit it, this puzzle is over my head.> I spoke too soon, this is actually one Sunday problem that I totally have the feel for. I see the primary theme now. The primary motif is all about Qe8+ and Qxa4. Then there is the secondary issue of how if Black tries to defend as in the game with ...Rd4 that Ra1 is a bone-crusher.

That's the capsule summary. For the details see dzechiel ;-)

I'm tempted to say that it's not that hard of a puzzle but since I didn't even come close to solving it, I guess I forfeit that right.

Jun-08-08  Guguni: Dzechiel, my best wishes to your son. May God help him!
Jun-08-08  sfm: What a senseless move 19.Qe7 is?! It gains nothing, loses a pawn right away to Bxf3 and Rxa4. Nobody above beginner level would play that move..?

... unless they had already seen it all, making 19.Qe7(!!) a deliberate, diabolical TRAP! I am afraid I'd have taken the bait too.

Sly guy, Mr. Wojtkiewicz!

Jun-08-08  sfm: <Sneaky: I'm tempted to say that it's not that hard of a puzzle but since I didn't even come close to solving it, I guess I forfeit that right.> LOL! Have been in the same situation a couple of times myself... ;-)
Jun-08-08  Towershield: My intuition told me pretty quickly that d5 was the best move, but for some time I couldn't see why... Then I realized that after cd white has Qe8+, and after that I spent some time to see if white had a better move than Bxd5 in case of ed.
Jun-08-08  stukkenjager: If you didn't see this line, you are no way near a solution:

22.d5 Qc8 23.dxe6 Ne5 24.Bg4! f6 25.Rd1 Ra8 26.Bh5! Kh8 (26...c5 27.f4 Nc6 28.Bf7+ Kh8 29.Qxc5) 27.f4 Ng6 28.Qd6

Have to admit I do use Fritz, insane is way beyond my scope.

Jun-08-08  rchuck: I, like many others, found 22.d5, I thought 22... exd5. 23.Bg4 doesn't work becasue of the rook on a4, but after Bxd5, I thought ...cXd5 and black's losing the subsequent exchange was not conclusive. Maybe I didn't think enough.

And Dave, my wife went through the same torture, so I too, wish your son all the very best, and you as a distraught parent, too.

Jun-08-08  LoveThatJoker: The winner is 22. d5!

There are three important variations:

If 22...ed 23. Bxd5! cd 24. Qe8+ Nf8 25. Qxa4 wins material for White.

If 22...cd?? then 23. Qe8+ Nf8 24. Qxa4 wins a whole Rook for a pawn.

If 22...Ra8 23. de! fe 24. Rd1 Rd8 25. Bg4 and nothing can prevent White from winning material with the coming 26. Bxe6 attacking the N three times.

Ok! NOW I can review the whole game!

Jun-08-08  zooter: Killer finish...white leaves two pieces hanging and gives black a very ugly choice to make...

And off course, I never try Sunday puzzles so cannot claim any credit except that I thought d5 looked bad!! Ah, reminds me of the conversation that goes on in the chess club I play against a master level coach:

Me(playing with another player): Is this a good position for me?

Coach: Looks like it...

Me: Off course, I need to play without making a blunder

Coach: Don't worry, you will..! :-)

<dzechiel:> My prayers are with you..

Jun-08-08  LoveThatJoker: Hi all...I've just gone one move up and noticed that Black played 22...Rd4

Without having seen the rest, I opine that this loses to 23. Ra1!

For if 23...h6 (say) 24. Ra8+ Kh7 25. Rd8! and Black still loses the N.

LTJ

Jun-08-08  LoveThatJoker: And - obviously - after I saw Black's 23rd, ...Qc8, I instantly decided upon 24. Qxd7 (for the Queen is immune due to the Back Rank Mate threat).

After I saw 24...Rd1+, I very quickly decided upon 25. Kg2.

LTJ

Jun-08-08  Chaoticmaster: With all Honesty i seen d5!! as the best move in about a minute but i had to calculate farther and noticed that the rook and queen is undefended. Took me about 10 min to calculate all the variation but its worth it kinda proud that i solved this insane puzzle.
Jun-08-08  awfulhangover: 22.d5!! is a fantastic move. Stupid me never thought of that. As usual, silent moves are the hardest to find.
