25.Rxh4! Rxh4 [25...gxh4 26.♗xf4 exf4 27.♕xf4 ♕c5 28.♕xh6 does not leave any hope to ♗lack] 26.Bxg5! Rh5 [26...hxg5 27.♕xg5+ and 28.♕xh4 and White has three more pions and the attack] 27. Bxh6 Kh8 [27...♔f7 28.♖g1 ♖g8 29.♖xg8 ♖xg8 30.♕g2+ and White wins] 28.Rg1 Qc5 29.Bg7+ Kg8 30.Qg2 Bxh3 31.Qg6 Bf5 (Black is beyond good and evil.) 32.Bxf5 Rxf5 33.Bf6+ and Black resigned: it is mate in two moves.

Jul-09-23  Brenin: Opening the g-file with 25 Rxh4 Rxh4 (not 25 ... gxh4 26 Bxf4 and 27 Qg2+) 26 Bxg5 seems to be the way forward, e.g. 26 ... hxg5 27 Qxg5+ with what looks like a mating attack, or 26 ... Rh5 27 Bxh6 as in the game.
Jul-09-23  mel gibson: I chose 25. Bxf4 but also considered 25. Rxh4
but I couldn't decide which one was best.

Stockfish 16 says:

25. Rxh4

(25. score for White +11.81 depth 39.

If I force SF to follow my idea Black is still busted but the move is not as strong:

25. Bxf4

(25. score for Black -6.75 depth 46.

Jul-09-23  stacase: Got the first three moves on a Sunday puzzle, so I'm happy (-:
Jul-09-23  jrredfield: I immediately considered 25 Bxd4 Bxg4 26 hxg4 but hesitated because that seemed too easy for a Sunday. But I couldn't find anything better. So At least I got the first three, and then figured maybe 26 ... exf4 and then wasn't sure after that. I checked then with SF and it agreed with these first four moves. I was surprised to find that the text differed considerably. After further analysis, it appears that 25 Rxh4 is pretty similar in strength to 25 Bxd4 - they both are winners.

Black was in trouble already after 22 Rg2, but 22 ...a5 or 22 ...Kg7 I think would have given Black at least a chance at a draw. 22 ... f5 weakened Black's King pawn defense sufficiently to give White a big edge.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Pleasant surprise--first 7/7 week in a long time. Particularly reassuring coming after last week's 3/7 mess. On to Monday--let's have back to back perfect weeks.
Jul-09-23  mel gibson: < jrredfield: I immediately considered 25 Bxd4 Bxg4>

Don't you mean:
25. Bxf4 Bxg4

There is no piece on d4.

scormus: I thought about 25 Bxf4, but without being completely sure decided on Rxf4. Getting the g-file open felt right. After that all the W moves seemed to follow naturally. Not the most difficult of Sundays and perhaps not the strongest play by B, but satisfying anyway after falling short the last two days. I was a bit surprised B played it out as long as he did.
Jul-09-23  ndg2: I would give this only a 'difficult' and not an 'insane'
Jul-09-23  agb2002: Black threatens Bxg4.

The first idea that comes to mind is 25.Rxh4 Rxh4 (25... gxh4 26.Bxf4 exf4 27.Qxf4 wins a pawn at least) 26.Bxg5:

A) 26... hxg5 27.Qxg5+ and 28.Qxh4 wins two pawns at least.

B) 26... Rxh3 27.Rxh3 Bxh3 28.Bxh6 looks winning. For example, 28... Kf7 (28... Kh8 29.Qg5 Rg8 30.Qf6+ Rg7 31.Qxg7#) 29.Qg5 Rg8 30.Qh5+ Ke7 31.Bg5+ Rxg5 (31... Kd7 32.Qh7+ and 33.Qxg8+ wins; 31... Kf8 32.Qh6+ Ke8 [32... Kf7 33.Bh5+; 32... Rg7 33.Bf6] 33.Qe6+ Kf8 34.Bh6+ Rg7 35.Qf6+) 32.Qxg5+ Kd7 (32... Ke8 33.Qh5+ and 34.Qxh3) 33.Qg7+, followed by 34.Qh8+ and 35.Qxh3 wins decisive material.

C) 26... Rh5 27.Bxh6 must be winning. For example, 27... Kf7 28.Rg1 Rg8 29.Rxg1 Kxg1 30.Qg2+ and mate soon.

Jul-09-23  Refused: could'T really decide which capture is more winning.

Black is completely lost after either 25.Bxf4 Bxg4 25.hxg4 exf4 (that black bishop is such a silly piece and white will get to the black king on the light squares)

or the more brutal and scenatic 25.Rxh4 Rxh4 26.Bxg5 where everything falls apart, too.

Jul-09-23  parch2: Gone for 25.R:h4 R:h4 26.B:g5 to open a route to the Black King, 26...R:h3 27.R:h3 B:h3 28.B:h6 looks good.

Had not considered, 26...Rh5

Jul-09-23  goodevans: <ndg2: I would give this only a 'difficult' and not an 'insane'>

I agree.

25.Rxh4 just screams out to be played. The only thing that even makes this 'difficult' is the harassing of White's R and Q delaying the winning discovered check.

Jul-09-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: Immediately, I saw the line: 25. Rxh4 Rxh4 26. Bxg5 hxg5 27. Qxg5+ Kf8 28. Qf6+ Ke8 29. Bg6#, however some steps aren't forced. For example, 27... Kg8 29. Rg1+ Bg4 30. Qxh4 and the Black ♔ will not escape.

If Black try 26... Rxh3 27. Rg1 Kf7 28. Bxh6 Bb5?! (I know c4 wins the ♗) 29. Qg5 Rxh6 30. Qxh6 Ke7 31. Rg7+ Kd8 32. Qf6+ Ke8 33. Qe7#.

If 25... gxh4 26. Bxf4 exf4 27. Qxf4 and Black cannot defend the following attack: Rg1+ and Qh6#. Desesperation like 25... Rxe4 doesn't work too: 26. fxe4 gxh4 27. Bxh6 Kf7 28. Rf1+ Ke7 29. Qg5+ Ke8 30. Rf8#.

Something like 25... Bf5 26. Bxf4 Bxe4 27. fxe4 gxh4 28. Bxh6 and Black becomes in the same mortal situation as shown before.

Jul-09-23  DanLanglois: Knew it was 25. Rxh4, not hard on the daily puzzle. Rated four stars I think no.
Jul-09-23  Whitehat1963: The ending reminds me of a question: what is the highest number of consecutive checks a player has given immediately before giving a checkmate? Similarly, what is the highest number of checks a player has given immediately before being mated?

Anyone know?

Jul-09-23  AlicesKnight: I could see that breaking open the g-file was the way but did not get the right sequence at all.
