Mar-28-06  notyetagm: 33 ♕b5? throws away a winning position because it allows the crushing 33 ... c2+!.

White misses that 34 ♖xc2? drops a whole rook to 34 ... ♕e1+ by the <remove the guard> tactic.

The game continues 34 ♔a2 (34 ♔a1?? ♕xa3#) ♕d2 35 ♕f1 ♕d4 and this <double attack> by the Black queen, threatening both 36 ... ♕x♘ and 36 ... ♕xb2#, wins Black a whole piece while his attack continues. White therefore resigned.

plang: 8..Bg4 avoided the line 8..Bg7 9 h3 which was scoring very well for white at the time. Van Wely had won a game in this line several months earlier against Guseinov after 10..Ne4? Van Wely was critical of 12 Bf4 but 12 Qc6 which had previously been played looks dubious as well. 13..Nh5 gave Van Wely some chances to consolidate; 13..Rxb2 would have been stronger. 17..f5 allowed white to simplify the position somewhat; 17..c4 would have been a more promising way for black to pursue his initiative. 22 0-0-0 seems illogical as the rook is useful supporting the passed a pawn and the king is no safer on c1; Stohl recommended 22 Ra3. Van Wely and Stohl both recommended 27..Rf4 though black still has to prove that his initiative is worth two pawns. Van Wely missed the opportunity to get the queens off with 30 f4..Rxf4 31 Rxf4..Bxf4 32 Qc3+..Qxc3 33 bxc with white having the better endgame. Van Vely blundered and lost with 33 Qb5?. Instead, after 33 Nxc8..cxb 34 Rcc3..Bxc3
35 Rxc3..Qxc3 36 Qxb2 white would still have been better.
