Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-23-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: The Tinman's song in Wizard of Oz is "If I Only Had a Heart"
Oct-24-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: Timman did OK at age 17 fending off threats at f7. His game only fell apart when he didn't appreciate the danger at e6.
Oct-24-19  spingo: Black went for glorney.

OhioChessFan: Couple of nice puns back to back.
Oct-24-19  mckmac: <Cheapo by the Dozen:Timman did OK at age 17...> White was no more than a year older. Good game. The early 3.Nc3 looks weird to me, but there seems to be a plan behind it. Top-shelf pun.
Oct-24-19  goodevans: <13...O-O-O> was a very weak move. The threat of 14...Nxe5 is easily parried and black is left with a weakness on f7 and, in some lines, a precarious K position due to the semi-open b-file. After <14.Qh3> black is pretty much forced to move his f-pawn, creating more weaknesses.

Maybe Timman should have played either <14...f5> or <15...f5>. That would have stopped Nxe6 but would still have allowed the manoeuvre <Nf4/Ng6> which is almost as unpleasant.

13...O-O-O was not the sort of move you'd associate with someone who'd eventually go on to become a strong GM. Everyone has off days though and the young Timman was also racking up lots of wins at this point in his career.

Oct-24-19  WorstPlayerEver: It's kind of ironic that after 7... Qc8 Black is in trouble in a heartbeat: 8. d4 #dia

HeMateMe: Ouch! This is 1968, Timman was quite young. I wonder if the Dutch hippy 'burned one' before the game?
Jan-08-21  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <HMM--I wonder if the Dutch hippy 'burned one' before the game?>

Maybe not, but he apparently played a smokin' joke on the winner, if the information given here is correct:

<Afterwards during post match analysis he gave me a congratulatory cigar, which promptly blew up in my face 😂>

Terance William Hart

Jan-09-21  Retireborn: Timman has always had a fondness for the Alekhine, and he trotted it out from time to time. As far as I can remember, he nearly always lost.
