Sep-20-10 | | dondiegodelavega: Nice attacking game! |
|
Oct-09-22 | | Brenin: I has 23 ... Nxg3+ 24 Nxg3 (24 Qxg3 Nxe2 forks Q and R) Qh4+ 25 Kg1 Qxg3+ 26 Qxg3 Nxe2+ 27 Kg2 Nxg3 28 Kxg3, winning a P, but that just shows why I'm not Tal. |

 | | Korora: I actually guessed 23...♘xg3, by pure luck. |
|
Oct-09-22 | | Brenin: I completely missed 25 ... e4, which threatens 26 ... e3, denying White the square f2, followed by Qh3 and Qg2 mate; it also threatens 26 ... Re5 followed by Rg5 (27 Bxe5 Bxe5 followed by Bd4+ or by Nh3+ and Bxg3 is deadly). It's the old adage: if you see a good move, look for a better one. |
|
Oct-09-22 | | jrredfield: I got the first two plies fairly quickly: 23 ... Nxg3+ 24 xg3 but chose 24 ... e4 instead of Qh4+. I was one move ahead since Black played 25 ... e4. From there I saw a slight advantage for Black but it was too deep for me to see a positive win. White would have been in better shape by playing 22 Rc3 instead of 22 g3, being only about a pawn down. |

 | | al wazir: I was sure the best line was 23...Nh5, and if 24. g4, then 24...Nhg3+ 25. Nxg3 Qh4+ 26. Kg1 Ne3, apparently winning the exchange. But after 27. Ne4, black doesn't win material and there is no convincing attack. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Saw the same win of a pawn as <Brenin> and thought myself as clever as the Magician. Yeah, right.
Still, Black does win, so claiming a half-credit and 5.5/7 for the week. |

Oct-09-22
 | | perfidious: Make that three of us who saw the line which wins a pawn, but leaves Black some work to do; Tal found a far more incisive way to wind up matters. |
|
Oct-09-22 | | agb2002: Black has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair. White threatens gxf4.
The first idea that comes to mind is 23... Nxg3+ 24.Nxg3 (24.Qxg3 Nxe2 wins an exchange and a pawn) 24... Qh4+ 25.Kg1 Qxg3+ 26.Qxg3 (26.Kh1 Qg2#) 26... Nxe2+ 27.Kg(h)2 Nxg3 winning a pawn but this is not a decisive advantage. Another options are 25... Bh6 and 25... e4 (instead of 25... Qxg3+). In the case of 25... e4: A) 26.Bxg7 e3 (threatens Qh3) 27.Rc2 Qh3 28.Bd1 (28.Bd3 Nxd3) 28... e2 (28... Nd3 29.Nf5 Qg5+ 30.Qg3 Qxf5 30.Ba1 seems to hand the advantage over) 29.Rxe2 Rxe2 30.Qxe2 (30.B(N)xe2 Qg2#) 30... Nxe2+ 31.Nxe2 Kxg7 - + [q vs B+N]. B) 26.Rc2 Bxb2 27.Rxb2 e3 28.Bd1 Nd3 29.Nf5 (29.Qe2 Qxg3+ and Nxb2) 29... Qg5+ 30.Qg3 Qxf5, with the double threat e2 and Nxb2, looks winning (31.Re2 Nf4). |

Oct-09-22 | | ClassZPlaya: If I were White I would have tried 24. Qxg3 Nxe2 25. Qh2 Nxc1 26. Bxc1 with a defensible position and some play. For example 26. ... f5 27. Ng5 would give ^Black^ something to worry about. |

 | | Dionysius1: I saw bits of it, but the e5-e4-e3 manoeuvre got me. Nice how quickly the problem of access for the Q at h4 is solved. |
|

 | | paulalbert: Got to 24.... Qh4ch but totally missed the e4 and e3 idea. |
|
Oct-09-22 | | Defrogger: Saw up to e4, not the rest of the line.
e2!! Pawn advanced to square defended by 4 pieces but still could not be captured! |
|
Oct-10-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Per the engine, White should have played Rc2 a move earlier to minimize the carnage. But Black still would have had a nice advantage. |
