Dionysius1: Why did White resign? He's got the fork on c4 covered now, so he can just take the b pawn.
Aug-18-12  Garech: After 17.Rxb2 dxe5 white is in trouble. He can't play 18.fxe5 because after ... Bxe5 he simply remains two pawns down without compensation and, on the contrary, black's initiative is growing. For example: 19.Rb4 Qc7 20.Bf4 Qc5+ 21.Rf2 Bxf4 22.Rxf4 Qxa3 and white has fallen apart:

Alternatives to 18.fxe5 are also unappealing, for instance:

18.Rb4!? f5! 19.Bf3 e4 20.Be2 Na4!

and white is forced to give up the exchange (as well as the two pawns already lost) to save the knight on a5.

Other choices for white's 18th lead to similar trouble - such as f5!? Perhaps the best idea is 18.Nc6 to get the queens off, but after ...Bxc6 19.Qxd8 Rfxd8 20.Bxb6 Rd2 21.Rf2 Rxf2 22.Kxf2 exf4 white is left with a hopeless endgame:

Great play from Suttles - a real original.

Dionysius1: Thanks <Garech>. I guess that's it. The smoke has cleared and B is two sound pawns up. In a club game I expect I'd play on to see if I could complicate things enough to give me chances, but at that level I suppose I would decline to throw good effort after bad, shrug my shoulders and have an early night! Thanks for putting so much time into your answer - I like the diagrams!
