perfidious: Larsen is comprehensively outplayed in this middlegame after trying to complicate matters.

Speelman gave Larsen difficulties, especially in their earliest meetings, possibly because their predilections were similar.

If one were to cover the players' names, it would be difficult to tell which of the players was untitled and which the top-class grandmaster!

Speelman's 4.5/9 completed his third and final IM norm; he was awarded the title at the following FIDE congress.

Larsen overcame this loss in grand style by conceding only one draw in the remaining eight rounds to win the tournament outright.

  Troller: Yasser:

<In round one I was playing rising star Jan Timman. But on my right side was the legendary Bent Larsen! He was playing another young guy on the rise, Jonathan Speelman. Jetlag often contributed to unexpected results in the first rounds of these tournaments, and Jonathan and I both managed to win our games. Bent went down in flames. I was distraught to see the chess legend in such a demise the first time I ever saw him.

But two things impressed me deeply. Bent managed to present an unshakable pokerface during the entire game, never disclosing his problems and the severity of the situation.

And then, when he resigned, he simply said "Thank you" and shook hands politely.

This was true class and from that moment I have always, regardless of the result, said "Thank you" to my opponents after a game.>

diceman: Looks more like an Old Indian vs a Caro-Kann.
Oct-27-18  Howard: For the record, in Speelman's book Best Chess Games 1970-80, he included only one game of his own in that collection--this one !
Oct-27-18  Granny O Doul: I guess it was 19...Rec8 that Larsen berated himself for; something about not considering his opponent's very obvious reply.

36. Re7 was a nice final touch.

Speelman was a bit of a late bloomer. He also, I understand, first discovered the famous Rafael Vaganian anagram.

Oct-28-18  Retireborn: <Granny> Never heard of this anagram, what is it?
Oct-28-18  Howard: Yes, please tell us !

scutigera: Which one do you mean? I like "A Vaginal Ear Fan", personally.
Oct-29-18  Granny O Doul: "A real vagina fan" was the one.
