Honza Cervenka: Very bold play of Gretarsson.
Jan-26-04  Catfriend: It's more black's loss... Smyslov really didn't play GM-ly!

Honza Cervenka: I think that Smyslov had very difficult position in very unusual opening (the only other game in this database where this line occurred is Joel Benjamin vs A Machulsky, 1990 ). White got very strong initiative for a pawn. For example 18...Qc5 19.Bxc7 Qxc7 20.Rxf5 and the game is over or 18...c6 19.Rd1 Qc5 20.g4 and white wins.
Jan-26-04  Catfriend: Gretarsson was vey wise on feeling what must he do - push his experienced opponent out of the book. I can't believe, though, the opening is sound! Can you enlighten me a bit?

Honza Cervenka: It is difficult to say. The line resembles Staunton's gambit. Maybe black should take the pawn on f3 or to play e3, but his position still looks uncomfortable to me. I guess that Gretarsson was well prepared for such possibilities.
Dec-07-05  Whitehat1963: Smyslov takes an Ass kicking -- literally!

Richard Taylor: Good game by Gretarsson aginst one of the greats - give credit where credit is due... "ass" in New Zealand or Biritish English = donkey ... "arse" is the word...lol

I wonder what some of our English names mean in Icelandic!! Be fair lads!! Be fair!!
