  plang: "GM draws" are not necessarily "pre-arranged" and it was not just Soviets who played them.

  Honza Cervenka: This draw actually helped Najdorf to take the sole first place in the tournament, a half point ahead of Spassky. On the other side it allowed Spassky to finish the second just a half point ahead of Smyslov. Of course, they could play on in the final position but objectively the position was equal and relatively quiet, and without any serious mistake from one of players the outcome of the game would be hardly different.
