Breunor: Black gave up the advantage with 26 ….Qd5?

Computer (34 ply) gives f5 at -1.78. It looks like the key is after 27 exf6 black can get his badly placed knight into the game by 27. Nbd6.

After 26… Qd5 it is rated as even.

Then one move later, black is losing!

Whit then gives it back with 27 Rfc1 where f5 again gives black the advantage.

Losing move appears to be 27 Kb8 instead of f5. It appears the key is white can play 28 Qe2 and start ganging up on the knight on c4.

perfidious: Was in the first round of a rapid event at a school on the Upper East Side in July 1992, one of two held that weekend. Only time I ever played Benko was in the opening round of the other. Got waxed by both of them on the black side of a King's Indian.

HeMateMe: Weekend swiss at a college, high school? 92nd street YMCA?

some of the upper east side schools are quite good at chess, do well in national competitions. I could see some of the private schools putting on a professional event or two. Dalton school, for one.

perfidious: <HMM>, it was in the East Nineties; might have been Dalton.

The other point about 28.Qe2 (or indeed 27.Qe2 as should have been played) is that ...f5 no longer forces exf6 freeing d6. White can just play Nc3 which previously, with the Q on f3, would have been met with ...Qxf3; gxf3 Nd2.

Breunor: Thanks Goodevans! That helps - I can see what the computer ‘plays’ and scores but it isn’t always clear why the valuation changes so much.
