Sneaky: You don't play an "insult opening" against Pillsbury and get away with it.
May-03-03  cinammon: What's with 2...Kf7???????
May-03-03  mdorothy: a deathwish.
May-03-03  chessamateur: This game is a joke!
Sep-28-03  Chessguest: go Fred
Sep-28-03  Tigran Petrosian: This must have been a waste of pillsbury's time.
Sep-28-03  BiLL RobeRTiE: I love the Fred.
Nov-12-03  drukenknight: Yes the Fred, aka Mao Tse Tung according to Schiller. It seems that 2...Nf6 is the only move that can hope to stay alive. White's Q often goes to f3 in this, with strong effect.
Dec-19-03  morphyvsfischer: this is a hilarious game. it looks like even my sister could beat Magana, and she sucks!
Dec-19-03  PinkPanther: I've seen french soldiers put up a better fight than this guy.
Dec-19-03  morphyvsfischer: LOL PP! anyone actually WIN a game with black in the Fred?
Dec-19-03  technical draw: This game was played in Paris. Maybe Magana had something else on his mind. I certainly would have. (That's the Louvre, gutterbrain)
Dec-20-03  Lung: Black reminds me of the first time I played chess.
Dec-29-03  JungleBoy: how in gods name could anybody play that opening and expect anything other than what happened?
Dec-30-03  Catfriend: I won once... but it was a blitz and I saced a queen nicely.. I don't remember it .. but it goes like this:
1.e4 f5 2.e:f5 Nf6 3.d4 b6.. I agree it sucks awfully, but it was a 3/0 time control!
Dec-30-03  refutor: <anyone actually WIN a game with black in the fred>

i went to http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquar... and they had a collection of 14 "fred" games...mostly crap but Oldrich Duras actually won one and drew another. here's the win

Jan-06-04  morphyvsfischer: Thanks refutor! Either Bernstein was a complete idiot or Duras was a genius, or both! White shouldve castled Queenside and started killing Black's ridiculous kingside, I think
Feb-09-04  boneheadcharles: Maybe Magana was playing blindfold and he sucked at it, or something.
Feb-11-04  boneheadcharles: The Fred Defense. However, can you actually call it a defense? After 2. exf5 the diagonal to the king is open. All you need is a bishop (or queen) over there and Black's life is over.
Feb-12-04  drukenknight: when black puts the K on f7 it is insane, Schiller shows a game like this as well. It seems that 2...Nf6 is the only hope. I have won a number of games with it, but not against good players. I'll try to find some of my notes.
Mar-08-04  uponthehill: Maybe that Magana was the first chess computer, powered by coal, and during that game the fireman get asleep, and forgot to refuel the engine ;)?
Apr-02-04  nikolaas: <uponthehill>That may be true...You never know... But I'd rather say that it was the first computer and that there went something subtle wrong iside of it.
Apr-02-04  Calchexas: OK, here's my theory: Magana plays the Fred (I dunno why, he touches the f-pawn and says, Hmm, what if I play 1. ...f5? More likely, he's trying to play the King's Gambit and that's the only way he can do it fast enough to work.) Pillsbury plays 2. fxe5, Magana realizes Pillsbury has 3. Qh5+! with mate in 2 after anything but 2. ...Nf6 and this. I think Magana thought HNP would play 3. Bc4 as well.
Apr-03-04  nikolaas: I once mated my brother in that way:
1.e4 f5 2.exf5 g6 3.d4 gxf5 4.Qh5++
