Nov-30-22 | | Brenin: 32 Rxg5+ fxg5 33 Rg6+ Kh8 (or Kh7) 34 Qf7 with mate. Rather easy for a Wednesday. |
|
Nov-30-22 | | Brenin: The winning combination, which would also make a good POTD, starts with 27 Nxh6, after Black's blunder 26 ... Rae8, when Qd8 or Re6, supporting the K-side defences, would have been safer. |

Nov-30-22 | | jrredfield: <Brenin: 32 Rxg5+ fxg5 33 Rg6+ Kh8 (or Kh7) 34 Qf7 with mate. Rather easy for a Wednesday.> Exactly what I saw, all in about 10 seconds. Definitely more of a Tuesday puzzle. |
|
Nov-30-22 | | jrredfield: Other than 32 Rxg5 which wins the quickest, 32 Qf5, 32 Kb2, 32 Nc5, 32 Qf4 all give White a sizeable advantage. Clearly, Black went astray a while back leading to all these paths to victory for White. After 32 ... Kh8, it's mate in 17 for White. |
|
Nov-30-22 | | jrredfield: If 32 ... fxg5, White mates in 8. |

 | | al wazir: My move, 32. Qf5, seems to win in all lines. Black's stoutest defense is 32...Re1+ 33. Rxe1 Rxe1+ 34. Kb2 Qf8 35. Qg6+ Kh8 36. Rxf6 Qg7 37. Qxg7+ Kxg7 38. Rg6+ Kf7 39. Rxg5, but it fails in the end. |
|
Nov-30-22 | | mel gibson: That was easy.
Stockfish 15 says:
32. Rxg5+
(32. Rxg5+ (♖g1xg5+ ♔g7-h8 ♕f1-f4 ♖e3-e1+ ♔c1-b2 ♖e8-g8 ♖c6xf6 ♖g8xg5

Or following the game line -
if Black takes the Rook 32...fxg5
32. Rxg5+ fxg5
33. Rg6+
(33. Rg6+ (♖c6-g6+ ♔g7-h8 ♕f1-f7 ♖e3-e1+ ♔c1-b2 ♖e1-b1+

Nov-30-22 | | saturn2: The white king has a shelter on b2.
32. Rxg5 fxg5 33.Rg6 Kh8 (or Kh7) Qf7
12...g6 weakend the king. That was ny first impression. Nb6 instead is better but Nf8 even much worse than g6. That i did not expect. |
|
Nov-30-22 | | agb2002: White has an extra pawn.
The pawn on f6 blocks the action of the white pieces. This suggests 32.Rxg5+: A) 32... fxg5 33.Rg6+ Kh8 (33... Kh7 34.Qf7+ Kh8 35.Qg7#) 34.Qf7 and mate soon (34... Rg8 35.Rh6#; 34... R8e6 35.Qg7#; 34... Re1+ 35.Kb2). B) 32... Kf7 33.Qf5 wins the knight at least.
C) 32... Kh8 33.Qf5 fxg5 34.Rh6+ Kg7(8) 35.Qg6+ Kf8 36.Rh8+ Ke7 37.Rh7+ Kf8 38.Q(R)f7#. D) 32... Kh7 33.Qf5+ Kh8 34.Rg6 wins. |

Nov-30-22 | | Mayankk: 32 Rxg5+ Kxg5 33 Rg6+ immediately springs to mind. After that 34 Qf7 is a strong reply to either 33 ... Kh7 or Kh8. I also briefly considered 32 Qf5 with Qg6+ threat and 32 h6+ to open the h file. But both are slow and allow Black to exchange one Rook via the Re1+ threat. So yeah, 32 Rxg5+ seems the only plausible solution. |

Nov-30-22 | | Chesschronicle22: Wow, nice game indeed :D |
|
Nov-30-22 | | TheaN: <32.Rxg5+> 32....fxg5 33.Rg6+ Kh8 34.Qf7! #6 kind of plays itself except for the final move. Black can only prevent mate by throwing all major pieces... and still get mated. There are alternatives on move 32 (at least prevent a fast mate), but it's still ill fated as Rxg5+ takes out the most crucial defender. 32....Kf7 33.Qf5 #8 (Black moved into the pin) is a major alternative, as is 32....Kh6 33.Rxf6+! Kxg5 34.Qf4+ Kh5 35.Rh6#. Perhaps the sturdiest defense is <32....Kh8>. White can go into a long mate variation with 33.Qf5 #19 (apparently) keeping pressure up, but here I'd prefer <33.Qxf6+ Qxf6 34.Rxf6 +-> and Black has nothing in the endgame. |
|
Nov-30-22 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: Many will find this main line: 32. ♖xg5+ fxg5 33. ♖g6+ ♔h8 34. ♕f7 ♖e1+ 35. ♔b2 ♕e7 36. ♖h6# or 35...♖1e6 36. ♕g7#. Therefore, Black must find another way to survive. The King (me) thinks that the simple 32... ♔h8 33. ♕xf6+ ♕xf6 34. ♖xf6 ♖3e7 35. ♖h6+ ♖h7 36. ♖xh7+ ♔xh7 37. ♖xd5 must be enough to win. |
