Nov-07-04  who: why not 29. QxN? (29...Rc-e8 is answered by 30.f3) or later 31 Rd8+ picking off the queen for a rook (after intermezzio exchanges) Nunn is no amature so i assume there is a reason.
Nov-07-04  aw1988: If the move order is right, then it's a mutual blunder. Taking the knight is in fact decisive. Also white missed 30. Rxd5, and 31 Rd8+ is an illegal move.

tpstar: ChessBase 8.0 confirms this gamescore and result, but these moves as listed are difficult to understand for a superb tactician like Nunn. 28 ... Nf4?? should lose to 29. Qxf4 (29 ... f5? 30. Qxf5) since the Re2 covers c2, then 31 ... Re7?? should lose the Queen to 32. Rd8+ Re8 33. Qxc6. I suspect Black actually played 25 ... Qc7 instead covering f4 and d8, as otherwise Black's back rank is extremely weak. Finally, Black probably resigned once they reached time control.
Nov-09-04  who: <aw1998> 30.Rxd5 in either scenario results in 30...Qxc2+ and then balck takes the knight. if 25...Qc7 is correct then the knight can't move after 30. c4 because 31. Rd7 forking c7 and f7 and d8 squares.
Nov-09-04  aw1988: <who> First, thank you for misspelling my name, reminding me why I should always search for aw1998.

If black does take the knight after Qxc2, then white uses the doubled rooks for a back rank mate. Also, I never said Rxe4 was bad, just responding to your earlier post.

Nov-09-04  aw1988: Er... and after Rxd5 Qxc2+ is illegal.
Nov-09-04  aw1988: Oh sorry, was thinking 31. Rxd5 not move 30.

  chessgames.com: 25...Qc7 looks much better.
