Sep-04-03  bunti: Here is another french winawer game where black is punished after he castles on 7th move and then soon pushes his pawn to c4. Better was c5xd4. White receives enough compensation for sacrificing a knight for the sake of opening up the h file. Because of black queen's greed for snatching pieces he missed several opportunities to convert a significant positional advantage into a win.
May-17-04  Phoenix: 11.h4 is a powerful, recently found move, and am surprised it hasn't been played more often...who knows, maybe it will one day! I've only looked at it today with the help of my Fritz 7, and have already found this neat variation :-D

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.♘c3 ♗b4 4.e5 ♘e7 (or 4...c5) 5.a3 ♗xc3+ 6.bxc3 c5 7.♕g4 0-0 8.♗d3 ♘bc6 9.♕h5 ♘g6 10.♘f3 ♕c7 11.h4!? cxd4 (the critical move I think, 11...c4 seems to get creamed pretty well by Morozevich, but has been played alot...further investigation required maybe :-))12.♔d1 dxc3 13.♖h3 ♘ce7 14.♘g5 (to provoke a weakness) 14...h6 15.♘f3 and Fritz initially gave 15...♘f5 like a -2.50 score due to the amazing queen trap 16.g4 ♘f4! 17.♗xf4 g6 HOWEVER!! I played these few moves and Fritz finally got a brain storm! 18.♗xh6!! gxh5 19.gxf5 with an incredibly powerful attack!! At the moment (it's only been running about 2 minutes) it's giving 19...♔h8 20.♖g3 f6 21.♗xf8 exf5 22.exf6 ♗d7 23.♗g7+ ♔g8 ♘e5 as +2.56.

I think this line has real potential, and can be fine tuned with home analysis into a real weapon. Also, there is the element of surprise! That's it for now, back to work :-)

alexrawlings: I'm currently playing a correspondance game which followed this game up until 11 h4 but then black played 11.. cxd4, the game has continued 12 cxd4 Ncxe5! 13 Bd2... I wish I'd read the previous post more closely!! I don't fancy my chances so much anymore but would have liked to have played the line Phonenix has cooked up... one day!
