May-27-05  Madman99X: 31... Bf3 is not a winning move.

After 32. gxf3 exf3,

33. Nd1! equalizes. (33 ...Qg5+ 34. Ng3 Qg4 35. Kf1 hxg3 36. hxg3)

May-27-05  Quant: I would like to ask chessgames.com whether there is a forced win at all? I spent some time considering Bf3 but rejected it as there was no obvious win. Frankly, after checking the line with crafty I feel a bit fooled. What is the point in solving tactical problems that are inherently unsound?
May-27-05  bangkokgambit: <Madman99x>
33.Nd1 is still lost

33...Qg5+ 34.Ng3 Qg4 35.Kf1 Re7 36.Ke1 hxg3 37.hxg3 Rb7 38.Ra6 Rd7 39.Rb1

May-27-05  darook: I doubt if 31...♗f3 is indeed a winning move for Black. I think White paniced here a bit too early. -Just my 50cents.
May-27-05  mirunik: <<mirunik: ... after 33.ne2 is 33...qg5+34.neg3 qg4!>

There is a defense afterall> Thats not right you can't defence your position with 35Qd1 cause in this case black has a plan which connected to f5-f4 and so on

May-27-05  Bluelapis: How about 32. Ng3 ?? Is the defence impossible ?? I wonder it.
May-27-05  sharkbenjamin: The move 31...Bf3 is a tactical device called the Alekhine's Block. The idea is to seal off the king's escape to the center and to prevent the 32.f3 or 32.f4 which would allow the White Queen to participate in the king's defence. After 31...Bf3 it is both black's and white's responsibility to solve the tactical problems. My assessment is that black is winning.
May-27-05  Aim1960: 32...Qg5+!? 33.Ng3 (33.Kh1 ef3 ) hg3 34.Ne4!(34.fg3? Qe3+ 35.Kf1/h1 Qf3+ 36.Kg1 Be5 with idea Bd4 ) gh2++ 35.Kh1 Qf5 36.Qe2 Be5 with adventage.
May-27-05  sirduke: 32. gxf3 exf3 33. Ne2 is a good defense, as black has no more than equality with proper play.
May-27-05  The beginner: Hmm very unclear if this is a real puzzle or the win ocured by White's 33 Ne4.

Fritz 8 like 33 Ne2 as other kibitzers have suggested. Fritz evaluates the game to be equal here.

May-27-05  YouRang: Wow - I surely didn't see that combination, and I surely never would. Hats off to Marjanovic.
May-27-05  sirduke: Example line (Fritz): 33. Ne2 Qg5+ 34. Ng3(returning the piece) Qg4 35. Qd1(stopping the possible mate on g2) hxg3 36. hxg3 and the knight will go to h2, chasing away the queen, then capture f3. White loses a pawn temporarily in this line, but gains it back after the exchange of queens and a rook.
May-27-05  turbulence: <YouRang: Wow - I surely didn't see that combination, and I surely never would. Hats off to Marjanovic.>

White can at least draw after 33.Ne2. Marjanovic won thanks to the blunder of Vukic.

May-27-05  szyymek: i think that 32.h3 is a good defence. It gives a big chance for whites to draw. 32.h3 Qf5 33.g3 hxg3 34.Nxg3 Bxg3 35.fxg3 Qxg3 36.Kf1 Qxh3 37.Ke1 Qh1 38.Kd2 Qg2 39.Kc1 Qxc2 40.Kxc2 Kg7 41.Rxa7 and whites has only one pawn less than blacks and everything is else possible..
May-27-05  mk2010: <szyymek: i think that 32.h3 is a good defence> 32.h3 is not good, black responds with 32...Qg5. In fact 33.Ne2 is the only defence
May-27-05  szyymek: <mk2010> sorry in my answer is just 32...Qg5. Analyze next my moves and you see that it is a quite good defence and leads i hope to draw...
May-27-05  kevin86: There certainly is a great amount of debate on this one! Keen how white's king is harrassed by black's queen-and of course, her majesty's foot soldiers.
May-27-05  farrooj: Hats off to chessgames for finding this jem. Hope tomorrow's one is nice.
May-27-05  mk2010: <Analyze next my moves and you see that it is a quite good defence and leads i hope to draw...> After 36.Kf1 black responds with 36...Re5 and then Rg5 and white is lost
May-27-05  Shokwave: Toughy. I picked the right couple of moves for the first of the line, but did not see all of white's tactical defensive possibilities after that.
May-27-05  Dick Brain: <bangkogambit> why do you think that play should lose for white? he seems to be well-defended.
May-27-05  Dick Brain: <Shokwave> we're not so sure it's a win I guess... anyhoo it looks like several people have analyzed this with a chess engine so I'll avoid saying anthing more for fear of looking ignorant again.
May-27-05  TheSlid: 31...h3
May-27-05  Saph: Funky.
May-28-05  patzer2: Fritz 8 gives it as equal after 31... Bf3!? 32. gxf3 exf3 33. Ne2! (33. Ne4?! favors Black, though White can put up a bit more resistance with 35. Nf6+!? in the game continuation) 33...Qg5+ (33... fxe2 34. Qxe2) 34. Neg3! Qg4 35. Qd1! hxg3 36. hxg3 Re5! 37. Nh2 Qxc4 38. R5a4 Qxd5 39. Nxf3= (-0.19 @ 14 depth & 1259 kN/s).
