Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-17-06  Shams: 34.Ra8! is a nice shot--the only way to keep a rook on the seventh, I think. You're right, you can almost feel Ljubojevic's ill will in this game.
Jan-17-06  Synergy: Cramped positions often harbor the burden of being subjected to sudden, tactical shots.
Jan-31-06  cantdropwontstop: A nice professional execution by
Ljubojevic in what was obviously
a revenge game against Miles from
the previous years Tilburg, where
Ljubo lost while sitting at a separate
table in protest of the catering
co-winner Miles received from the
organizers (being allowed to lie
horizontally on a special table in
front of the Chess board due to a
back problem - 'Was Miles just prone
to win?' - [C.L.]).

Notice that when White MUST win against the Dragon, he goes for g4! early on (with Ljubojevic's additional
smart alignment with [Bobby's] Qe2!)
and doesn't allow the later ...h5!,
the Soltis variation, well known as
a door-slammer to White's attacking
ambitions in the Yugoslav Dragon
(and how about the poetic justice of
Ljubo being a Yugoslav here!).
I would even have reversed White's
10th and 11th moves here, since it
seems to me that even 10...h5! could
be played.

Jan-31-06  cantdropwontstop: But it all raises another important
question...Why in the world was this
obviously seminal game against the
Dragon not known to Anand for his
'93 World Blast against Garry?

I guess he just never expected Garry
to trot out the Dragon. It was basically by doing that which won the match for Kasparov.
