Kibitzer's Corner
May-16-07  SuperPatzer77: 76...Kf6!!, 77.Kxb2 Ke7, 78.Kc3 Nd6! threatening to attack the bishop and force draw, 79.Be6 Nb7!, 80.Bd5 Nc5 forcing White to give up his d-pawn, 81.d8=Q Kxd8, 82.Kd4 Nd7, 83.Be6 (If 83...Ke7?, 84.Bxd7 Kxd7, 85.Kd5! White wins) Nf6! keeping attacking the g-pawn, 86.g5 Ke7!, 87.Ke5 Nh7, 88.g6 Kf8! -- Black draws!!! Marovic keeps trying to win a game but it is impossible for him to make a progress for an endgame win because of the h-pawn and the light squared bishop that is unable to control the dark square h8. Kudos to the great Viktor Korchnoi!!
Jun-05-07  SuperPatzer77: Correction for SuperPatzer77: 76...Kf6!!, 77.Kxb2 Ke7, 78.Kc3 Nd6!, threatening to attack the bishop and force draw, 79.Be6 Nb7!, 80.Bd5 Nc5, forcing White to give up his d-pawn, 81.d8=Q+ Kxd8, 82.Kd4 Nd7, 83.Be6 (If 83...Ke7?, 84.Bxd7 Kxd7, 85.Kd5! White wins) Nf6!, keeping attacking the g-pawn, 84.g5 Ke7!, 85.Ke5 Nh7, 86.g6 Kf8!! -- Black draws!!! If 87. gxh7 Kg7, 88. Bf5 Kh8, seeing that White is unable to make a progress for an endgame win because of the h-pawn and the light-squared bishop that is unable to control the dark h8 square. If 87. Bf5 Kg7, 88. Kf4 Nf8, 89. Kg5 Nxg6, 90. Bxg6 Black draws!!! It is because of King and Bishop vs King that is declared an automatic draw. Instead of 86...Kf8!!, 86...Nf6??, 87. g7! White wins or 86...Nf8??, 87. g7! White wins. It is the only move for draw is 86...Kf8!! The Yugoslav GM Marovic realized that it is impossible for him to win the endgame and decided to agree to a draw after 86...Kf8!!! Kudos to the great Viktor Korchnoi - one of my favorite players.
