Pawn and Two: Korchnoi and Olafsson tied for 1st at Hastings 1955/56 with a score of 7-2. Taimanov finished 4th with a score of 6-3.

In this game, it would seem that Black could still have tried 18...Bg7, and if 19.Ng5 Bf5. Instead the players quickly drew after 18...Kc7 19.Qa7+.

Korchnoi clears up some of the questions about this game in his book, "Chess is My Life", 1978 edition, in which he stated that he and Taimanov had agreed to compose this game. He then stated that Taimanov in his book, "Chess Encounters", went into raptures about how brilliantly they had played. To which Korchnoi commented, <"but in fact the whole game had been worked out beforehand!>

Dec-23-09  vonKrolock: Discussed - together with other cases of prearranged draws - in an article by Hans Ree <"The Art of Drawing"> (chesscafe online). A further quote from the Korchnoi book is provided by Mr. Ree: <"... it would appear that the English have never in fact learned to arrange draws beforehand. In a way that you can't find fault, because it's done so well. As a textbook example for the English and for others who are equally uneducated in this respect, I will give without commentary one partly forgotten game.">
