Dec-28-11  ughaibu: What's the story about this then?
I guess this: Konstantinopolsky vs Korchnoi, 1952 might be a partial explanation but still, we're talking about Korchnoi, of all people (and creatures).
Dec-28-11  paul1959: According to my old ECO , the game ending at the 16th is confirmed. If 17 exf5 Rac8 and after a number of sharp moves the variation is given as equal. Both 12-...e5 and 16 ...Bxf5 got a "!". There are no satisfactory alternatives for Black provided in this 9 Ndb5 line, so this could be one of those trick variations that allow a weaker player to force a draw.
Dec-28-11  ughaibu: I see, thanks. (Not so sure about the weaker player here, though.)

FSR: Boleslavsky was one of the top players in the world at this time, while Korchnoi, not yet 21, was much lower ranked. Chessmetrics rates Boleslavsky at 2719 (#7 in the world) and Korchnoi at just 2552 (#97 in the world) going into this event. However, Korchnoi had a great tournament, finishing with 11/19 (2.8 points above Chessmetrics' expectations), just half a point behind Boleslavsky, who finished slightly below his expected result. http://chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/Sing...
