Jun-01-04 | | mack: Excellent puzzle material here... either the more obvious move 6 or the subtler move 8, where black cannot help but lose his queen. |
Jul-17-04 | | Queen killer: It's amazing how black can get totally demolished in the King's Gambit accepted if he's a little unsure. |
Jan-20-06 | | pawn52: Oh YEAH!!!
I finally got one...hehehe..
Pretty easy puzzle today. |
Jan-20-06 | | esticles: Oh now I get it, we had to trap the queen. I knew the obvious Bxf7+ couldn't be the pure solution to a Friday puzzle. |
Jan-20-06 | | Akavall: What about 6...Ke7 (instead of 6...Kd8?), black seem to be in tough postion, but not lost yet. |
Jan-20-06 | | kevin86: A super early queen trap-far better than the 4 move one exibited everywhere:
1 d4 Nf6
2 Nd2 e5
3 dxe5 Ng4
4 h3 Ne3 |
Jan-20-06 | | pastpawn: <Akavall>: 6 ... ♔e7 is better, but after 7.h3 ♕g3 8. ♘c3 ♔xf7 9. ♘e2 ♕g6 10. ♘e5+ the queen goes anyway. |
Jan-20-06 | | Infohunter: Got it. Of course the first thing I saw was the obvious fact that, after 6.Bxf7+, 6...Kxf7 would lose to 7.Ne5+. But the followup as played nets Black's Queen just the same.
Black should have played either 5...Qh5 or 5...Qh6 instead of 5...Qg4. Then again, either 3...Nf6 or 3...d5 would have been far superior to 3...Qh4+. I remember Tartakower's comment on this same move in _500 Master Games of Chess_, which occurred in the Immortal Game, Anderssen vs Kieseritzky, 1851: "A reflex check; a stillborn manoevre." Never at a loss for words was he! |
Jan-20-06 | | RodSerling: Can this really be a Friday puzzle? Seems more like a Monday breezer... |
Jan-20-06 | | TalEl: Next move and the queen gets trapped. |
Jan-20-06 | | dzechiel: The first move, of course, is very easy to find. But once it's made, then the next two are forcing and not too difficult. It's amazing how quickly you can lose at this game with just one misstep. |
Jan-20-06 | | Confuse: so easy if u've seen it before, but otherwise opaque and mysterious : ) |
Jan-20-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Beautiful puzzle! |
Jan-20-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: <infohunter> I think you stole <Mating Net>'s avatar. :) (if I'm not mistaken, that used to be his). |
Jan-20-06 | | Manu2: Oh I saw it Eeeeeeeeh!! Easy for a Friday |
Jan-20-06
 | | al wazir: This trap works even if black plays 6...Ke7, but it isn't an immediate win: 6...Ke7 7. h3 Qg3 8. Nc3 Kxf7 9. Ne2 Nxe4 10. Nxg3 Nxg3+ 11. Kg1 Nxh1 12. Kxh1. Black has a ♖, ♗, and ♙ for his ♕. |
Jan-20-06 | | SamuelS: I did not quite get it. Of course I saw 6. Bxf7+ Kd8 (not 6...Kxf7?? 7. Ne5+) and then 7. h3 trying to trap the queen, but I was not patient enough to calculate it to the very end. |
Jan-20-06 | | Averageguy: I got it all to 8...Qg3 but gave up there as I didn't see 9.Nc3. |
Jan-20-06 | | LoFarkas: Wow, I got a friday puzzle under my belt!
This Gorbunov guy must have been a fun player to watch! He lost this game in 8 moves, but the only other game he has in the database; well he won that one in 8! |
Jan-20-06 | | Kaidra: Might have to start playing the KG again after seeing that. |
Jan-20-06 | | kingneil: after knc3 what if black plays Bc5 threatning mate on f2 |
Jan-20-06 | | erimiro1: I'm sure that the first thing Gurbanov made after the game was to open a theory book, just to find out that 5.-Qg4?? was a fatal mistake. 5.-Qg5, was essential but then comes 6.Qe1! So also the earlier 4.-Nf6 was not a good option. Recommended is 4.-g5, and possible are 4.-d6, 4.-Nc6 (analyzed to details by Fischer and Keres). |
Jan-20-06
 | | LIFE Master AJ: I did not have to think about this one (spotted Bxf7+ right away) ... I had seen this trap recently, (perhaps in an opening book). On another note, I purchased "Catastrophe In The Chess Opening," by James Plaskett at chess club last night. (But I have not had a chance to spend a lot of time with it.) |
Jan-20-06 | | CavalloNero: Bc5 saves the queen? |
Jan-20-06 | | beenthere240: Hmm 8. .....Bc5
9.Ne2 Qf2 mate!!
oh oh 8. ....Bc5
9.d4 |
