Feb-22-06  Catenaccio: as sagahelten I also thought Bh6. But it is instantly refuted by Rg6.
Feb-22-06  Tariqov: pretty hard for a wednesday unless you know about this trick,<notyetagm>that was my first chessbook(How To Beat Your Dad At Chess)!!only after a minute i figured out the Qg4 trick.
Feb-22-06  psmith: <legi> <Willem Wallekers> 27... Kh8 28. Qg4? Rg6 and Black holds.

But 27... Kh8 28. Qd4! Nc6 29. Qc3 d4 30. Qg3 wins. (credit due to Fritz)

Feb-22-06  psmith: So, I saw the main line, but I had to use Fritz to crack 27...Kh8, and I don't think anyone should count as having solved this unless they figured out that line on their own. (Not me, but apparently at least some of the other solvers also missed this part.)
Feb-22-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Whoa, quite a tough puzzle for Wednesdays...:( I didn't get it, I was thinking of 27.Nxg7..

Bad week for me, only found Monday's puzzle so far! :(

Feb-22-06  legi: <psimth> Thanks. Wow, 30.♕g3 is strong!
Feb-22-06  Marvol: Missed this one. Didn't realise the black queen was hanging, didn't see that after Qg4 white threatened to win it w/discovered check.

Oh well, learned something today :-P!

Feb-22-06  dakgootje: First i thought when i saw the puzzle was: good position to mate black. So i began looking for moves which could make a devasting attack. First i looked at Nh6 but that really didnt seem to work after Kh8 so i left that line and began calculating the next one.

Then i thought well lets get the queen in the attack so i began calculating Qg4, but that didnt seem to work either because of g6 or Rg6, i thought. Then i saw: 'hee if g6 or Rg6 then i'll just play nh6 winning the queen, so i was convinced there was a stronger move for black and began looking for a move ut g6 and Rg6. soon i found Kh8 convincing enough for ruining my nicely planned attack, so i abandoned that line too...

then i thought: well that 'winning the queen'-idea was nicely if it wasnt refuted by that crappy king, so i thought well cant we move the queen to g4 a tempo? So i started looking at Rxg7 and found ...♗xg7 28. ♕g4 ♖g6 29. ♘h6 ♗xh6 30. ♕xd7 (or 28. ...♕xf5) both convincing enough for playing.

At the moment i wanted to click on the puzzle for the solution: i was stunned... Of course black wasnt forced to take white rook with its bishop, it could just move its king to h8! So i started to look for moves to save whites position. First i looked at the nice Rxh7 (lets force black to take the rook), but that didnt work, so i left that variation. Next i thought: maybe Qg4 works here too, but soon saw it didnt because of Rg6. Then i thought: well if i cant attack blacks king via the g-file, the maybe use the diagonals, and was sad to see the Be5 didnt work either (of course).

Then i thought: well its a nice diagonal, but i cant use the bishop for it...then use the queen, so i started looking at Qd4, and saw that the only good way for black to prevent mate was Nc6, after which whites queen had to retreat to c3, as i thought that Qf6 failed to Re6. After that black had to prevent mate again with d4 after which Qg3 wins, and that how i solved the puzzle.

post scriptum: now i see that black has 27... Kh8 28. Qd4! Nc6 29. Qc3 Ne5 and im afraid that i have to say that i didnt calculate that one...

Feb-22-06  Zplane: Could someone explain the Nf5 BG4 trick before I play my son?
Feb-22-06  dakgootje: just gave Fritz8 a look at the position and after 27. ...Kh8 it doesnt suggest Qd4 (only its 3rd option) but considers Rg4 and after that Rg3 best. Though if 28. Qd4 then 28. ...Nc2 (much better of course then Nc6) 29. Rxf7 Nxd4 30. Be5 Kg8 31. Rxd7 Rxe5 32. Nxd4 dxe4 (eval 1.00; depth 13 ply; 256M nodes)
Feb-22-06  jahhaj: I agree with <dakgootje>. You don't have to work anything out after 27...Kh8. Just retreat the rook, you've won a pawn and exposed Black's king. What more do you want?
Feb-22-06  RookFile: This position is really something. You can make the argument that every one of black's pieces is logically placed. Yet White still has a tactical shot.

  Gypsy: If 23...Nc2, then 24.Rc3...

If 39...Rxh6, then 40.Qg4 Rg6 41.Qxc8+ ...

Feb-22-06  MorphyMatt: <olydream3> Darn, that's what I was thinking.
Feb-22-06  YouRang: Drat. Missed it! I only glanced at 27. Rxg7+, but I didn't follow through after 27...Bxg7. I need to work on my follow-through. :(
Feb-22-06  beenthere240: 31. Rg3 indirectly defends the b pawn and gets ready for the attack on the g file, leading to simplifications and a won endgame.
Feb-22-06  zhentil: White either mates or wins the queen in 3 moves, and people are complaining that it's too difficult?
Feb-22-06  kevin86: A good puzzle-I tried Qg4 immediately;does that work?

After all, white wins a queen and pawn for rook and piece, not exactly a rock crushing advantage.

Feb-22-06  something1234: I was struggling until i noticed the undefedned queen. Then its just the double attack of winning the queen or mate if the bishop takes. So the next problem was what if he ignores the rook but i found Qd4 threatining discovered checks. Must admit i didnt look at 28..Qxf5 as blacks reply to Qg4. I thought yesterdays puzzle was very easy compared to todays.
Feb-22-06  something1234: kevin86: after 27..Kh8 what do you do ?
Feb-22-06  vinohradska: <Fezzik> thanks, I was wondering about that 39 Bh6 move.
Feb-22-06  Everett: <jahhaj:
Always look for unproteted pieces when looking for combinations!>

Aagaard agrees with you. This idea has helped me notice tactics much better of late.

Feb-22-06  kevin86: <something1234> Good answer

I guess I'm out of kilter this week, yesterday,I went for the big sacrifice and it failed-today I went for the quieter move, and the sac was the correct choice.:(

Feb-22-06  alphee: Not so easy to find with 3 possible candidate moves (♖xg7+, ♘h6+, ♗h6) and nothing totally obvious after 29 ♕xf5 . What I ended up with was 27. ♖xg7+ ♗xg7 28. ♕g4 ♕xf5 29. ♕xf5 ♖f6 30. ♕d7 ♖fe6 then I stopped and checked the solution.
Feb-22-06  Katana: Can someone help me with this one?
I recently played a game against a chess computer. I had sacrificed two pieces for greater control of space.(playing the white pieces)

click for larger view

The game went on like this:
1. .. , Nc6
2. Rfe1, Rb8?
3. Re3 , Qc7?
4. Bh6!! gxh6
5. Rg3+ Kh8
6. Qd2 Kh7
7. Rh3 Kg8
8. Qxh6 and mate on the next move.

I'd like to know if black had a proper defence against my attack or was it indeed a won postion?(The chesscomputer was actually set to a high rating level)
