May-04-04  capablancakarpov: What a great defense by karpov with the King in the center.
Sep-03-04  dontknow: After 46 rc8 why does black not play 46..r:c8 47 q:c8 q:g2 ?
Sep-03-04  slapwa: Because of the zwischenzug 47 Qd7+, and if the King goes back the rook goes with check, and if it goes forward (h6 or f6) 48 Q:c8 then threatens mate (Qh8 or Qf6) and there isn't time for Q:g2.

tpstar: Fascinating subvariation. What would be best play after 46 ... Rxc8 47. Qd7+! Be7!? instead?
Sep-04-04  slapwa: tpstar: good question. You may have spotted something the players missed. 47. ..., Be7 looks good for Black.

  tpstar: I think the key line is 46 ... Rxc8 47. Qd7+! Be7!? 48. Qxe7+ Kh6 49. Bh3 (49. Bh1?? Qf1+) and now Black could play for the attack with 49 ... Rb8 & 50 ... Rb1+ or try to simplify with 49 ... Rc2!? 50. Kxc2 (50. Bg4 Ra2 threatens 51 ... Qf1#) Qxe2+, then check on the third rank & 52 ... Qxh3 but Black should pull out the endgame. The same idea is even better with 49. Qd7 Rc2! picking up both pieces plus the Pe4 soon also, or else 50. Qg4 Ra2 and White's pieces have no play. Any improvements?
Nov-07-15  Everett: Yes, looks like a blunder by Karpov, returned in kind by Kamsky on move 46.
