Chessical: With <39.Qxg6+!!> Mason brilliantly seizes the opportunity presented after Gunsberg's 38...Raf7? (38...Rh8 would have held on).

After <40.Bxf5> exf5 41.Qxh6+ Rh7 42.Qxh7 is mate.

May-07-04  akiba82: Mason inaugurates an interesting line opening combination with 26 f5 and it is clear that after 26... ef5 27 Nf5 Black cant very well play 27... Bf5 on account of 28 Rf5. So 27... Nc8 28 Ne3 and White has the half open f-file for his attack. Then Mason comes up with the pseudo exchange sac 31 Re6 and after fe6 32 Ng4 it is clear he can regain the exchange with Nf6. Instead he renounces the regain of the exchange figuring his knight of f6 is superior to the rook. But I am not sure if this is correct. In the game it certainly resulted in an elegant queen offer and mating net but as chessical points out 38... Rh8 would have held. Instead Mason would have done better to play 33 Nf6 Qc6 34 Ng8 Rg8 35 Rb4 e.g.
May-07-04  akiba82: In the last note, I meant 35 Rb5. White should retain the advantage as Black has weaknesses on a5 e6 and g6 to worry about and White threatens to infiltrate on the b-file.

Chessical: <Akiba82> Interesting ideas in your post, so I looked again at the position. Now, I am not sure if my belief that Gunsberg could "hold on" with <38...Rh8> is correct. Perhaps "hold on for a bit longer" was more correct?

Mason could have played: 38...Rh8 <39.Nh5+> Kf7 40.Nf4 Rg8 41.h5! Ke7 42.Nxg6+ threatening Bxf5. Although nominally down in material, I like his attacking prospects.

May-07-04  akiba82: Ok, Chessical, your variation appears sound. I guess Mason was correct not to retrieve the exchange after all.

Honza Cervenka: White could have played also 28.Nxh6 Kxh6 29.Qd2+ Kh7 30.Qg5 with threat Qxh5.
