Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-17-06  suenteus po 147: I guess Timman and Geller didn't feel like getting into it right out of the gate. How old was Geller when he played in this tournament?
Apr-17-06  diagonal: Geller was then 52 years old (born 1925): in 1977 at the traditional tournament from Wijk aan Zee, he came in first shared with Sosonko, with Timman third.

Btw: Efim Geller was the oldest to win a USSR Championship: he was already 54 years old when he won the 47th USSR Championship in 1979 (it was apparently his second soviet title, Geller won already in... 1955).

Apr-18-06  suenteus po 147: <diagonal> Thanks for that. Very interesting. It's also impressive that Geller had two Soviet championship wins 22 years apart.
Apr-18-06  diagonal: Indeed, a most remarkable gap (from 1955 to 1979), Geller played in total 23 USSR Championships - no one has played MORE often, it's a record tied only by Taimanov.
