Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-12-08  zev22407: Geller had a strong 22 move -Ne4! attacking f2 and now 23)Bxe4 Bxe4 24)e6xd7 Q-f5 and black has a strong counter play.
Apr-12-08  xrt999: Interesting to see Geller employ a gambit, not his usual style of play; 2...c5 in the King's indian system, quite odd and something Ive never seen until now.

Apr-12-08  refutor: this opening (3. ...b5) is called the "benko gambit". 2. ...c5 is the benoni, opening up the long diagonal for the bishop by ...c5 instead of ...e5. quite an interesting and sharp opening
Apr-12-08  xrt999: I think it was Botvinnik who said we did not understand the KI until Geller.

I think the actual word Botvinnik used was (we) and I would infer that (we) referred to either the Russians or the world. My guess is the Russians, since Geller's contemporary Fischer was known for sharp Kings Indians. Geller had a lifetime winning record against Fischer, but Geller did not play the KID against him, though. Infer what you may.

So, that being said I have to correct you and call this opening what it is: Indian defense/Benko Gambit.

Furthermore, I would call 1d4 c5 a Benoni; Im not sure if any opening with ...c5 in its first few moves automatically classifies as a Benoni...

Apr-12-08  euripides: This double-fianchetto line is sometimes given as the reason why Black should delay Bxa6 in the Benko until White has committed the knight to c3.

<Zev> Doesn't White simply play <22...Ne4 23.Bxe4 Bxe4 24.exd7 Qf5> 25.dxc8=Q+ ? He can then close the diagonal with f3 and return a little material if necessary.

Apr-17-08  zev22407: To EURIPIDES
My mistake ,after 24)exd7 black plays R-f8 first and on 25)e3 Q-f5
Apr-17-08  euripides: <zev> yes that's interesting.

One thought then is <22...Ne4 23.Bxe4 Bxe4 24.exd7 Rf8 25.e3 Qf5> 26.f3.

Now if Black continues the attack White has some resources using the d pawn e.g. 26...Bxf3 27.Rf1 when 27...Bxd1 runs into 28.Rxf5 Rd8 29.Nc6 (or simply Rxd1) Rxd7 30.Rb8+ and 27...g4 can be met by 28.Qd5+ Qxd5 (Bxd5 29.Rxf5) 29.Nxd5 Rd8 30.Rxf3 gxf3 31.Rb7 when White looks winning. Similarly 26...Qxf3 27.Qxf3 Bxf3 28.Rf1 g4 29.Rxf3 gxf3 30.Nc6.

But Black can simply take the exchange back with 26...Bxb1 27.Rxb1 Qxd7 or even 27....Qxf3 and looks OK in both cases.
