May-02-06  McCool: Moves sixteen to nineteen are beatiful for white!
Jun-16-06  suenteus po 147: Does anyone know what Kamsky's and Gelfand's ratings were when this tournament took place? I know that after this tournament Kamsky was catapulted into the top ten, but how far did he have to go?
Jun-18-06  Chess Classics: <sp147> All I could dig up is that Kamsky became a GM in 1990. Someone with better chess history than me will be able to tell you more.

Regards,
CC

Mar-29-24  VictorVonDoom: <suenteus po 147> chessmetrics says that kamsky had a rating of 2620 during this tournament. Gelfand had a rating of 2753
Mar-29-24  VictorVonDoom: This is almost accurate of course as Gelfand performed very well in the USSR championship and in Linares 1990 a few years before this.

Whereas Kamsky earned his title the same year as this tournament.

Mar-29-24  VictorVonDoom: Kamsky sharing first place in this tournament alone put him in the top 100. After this, he was invited to Linares 1991 where he performed poorly. After this he won the US chess championship at the age of 17 to catapult into the top 50.

After this, he had good performances in the 15th Interpolis and Dortmund 1992 (where he defeated Kasparov). This put him in the top 20.

After this, he placed third in the interzonal at Biel and Groningen, making it into the top 10.

After this, he had a mediocre performance at US chess Championship 1993.

But after that, he had a superb performance at both the classical and fide candidates.

In the pca candidates, he defeated both Kramnik (who was one of the top 5 players at the time) and Nigel Short (1993 pca chess championship challenger) by great margins.

In the fide candidates, Kamsky defeated Paul Van Der Sterren in the first round. After this, he beat world number 2, Vishy Anand and world number 3, Valery Salov (this being his greatest match as he won 4 games, drew 3 and lost none against such a high rated player)

This was his peak moment in the chess world. But after this he retired from professional chess while still in the top 10

HeMateMe: I remember when kamsky first came over here, around age 14;or 15. On television the interviewer asked GK why he left Russia.

"There's more food here."

That's a direct quote.

Mar-29-24  Cassandro: Soon there's more food over there instead.
