Jan-27-06  refutor: what's the idea of 8.a3 here? wouldn't 8.a4 be more to the point?

IMlday: 8.a3 is much more flexible because it retains the possibility of breaking with ♖b1, ♗d2, b2-b4 etc. This game was played in the first round of the Olympiad on Malta. The clocks hadn't been tested yet. We finished the game after about 3 and a half hours and then spent about 20 minutes analysing. When I went back to watch the time scrambles the other games still had 45 minutes left on the clocks!
Jan-27-06  refutor: thank you lawrence. i would instinctively play 8.a4. i'll need to work on my instincts ;) after playing 8.a3 i would be worried about the queenside expansion similar to what happened around move 11 or so. you'd have to believe that black is better there?
Jan-27-06  Elrathia Kingi: This game could be titled "An Apol a Day." Interesting game. I'm curious why g5 was never tried, ie. 30.g5 ♕d6 31.♗b1 ♗c8 32.♕f3 ♗e6 33.♗c2 ♔g8 34.♔g1 ♔g7 35.♔g2 ♗d7 36.♕e2 ♔f8 37.♕e5 ♕xe5 38.dxe5 ♘c6 39.e6 etc. (GNU Chess 5.07). Any thoughts?

IMlday: <EK> Instead of 30..♕d6 I'd have likely played 30..♕f7 keeping the f-file pin. White is still slightly better, but a draw is the most likely result. <ref..> I don't believe Black was better out of the opening, just equal. The later problems came from trying to create complications and a chance to win. I did manage to win a similar middlegame with White in L Day vs B Campbell, 1996
