  wwall: It looks like 43...Kc4? loses. Black should draw with 43...Ke4 44.g4 Kf3 or 44.Ke2 h5 or 44.g3 h5.

Position after 42.Kd2

Could Black have resisted with best defense? Instead of the game continuation 42...g5, the analysis begins with 42...h5:

42...h5 43.c3+ Ke4 <!> 44.h4 e5 45.Ke2 Kf4 46.Kd3 <!> 46...g5 47.hxg5 Kxg5 48.Ke4 Kf6 49.Kd5 <49.g3 is an easier win> [Diagram]

Analysis completed by Mr. Steiner:

49...Kf5 50.c4 e4 51.Kd4 <! (51.c5? merely draws)> 51...Kf4 52.c5 h4 53.c6 [Diagram]

Now two variations:

a) 53...h3 54.gxh3 e3 55.c7 e2 56.c8=Q e1=Q 57.Qg4#

b) 53...e3 54.Kd3 h3 55.gxh3 Kf3 56.c7 e2 57.c8=Q e1=Q 58.Qg4+ Kf2 59.Qh4+

Important conclusion:

White wins because he can conquer the Black free ♙ on e6 while at the same time coming closer to the ♙s on g7 and h6. Black instead has to move away from the White ♙s on g2 and h3 to conquer the White free ♙ on c2. As such situations commonly arise in endgames, it is important to carefully consider the pawn configuration before trading off pieces.

Sep-06-17  andrea volponi: 42...h5(=) -c3+ Ke4 -h4 e5??(loses force,44...Kd5=)
