Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-31-05  GreenDayGuy: I wonder which ally made Blackburne play QXR? He must have been pretty angry after this. :)
Jan-31-05  notsodeepthought: Well, the alternatives were not that great - if 43 ...Kf8 44 Qf3+ followed by mate in f7, and if 43 ...Kh8 then 44 Rh7+ Kg8 45 Q:g6+ and mate (again) in f7. Besides, it's tough to blame defeat on your allies, when your opponent is saddled with the redoubtable NN.
Feb-01-05  GreenDayGuy: Eh, I guess your right.

Sally Simpson: According to the Falkirk Herald 11th March 1896 these pairs played two games. This one and other game was a draw. The same issue also reports Pillsbury gave a 34 board simultaneous at Hastings winning 30 and drawing 4.

I doubt it was this one. :-)

The decisive game with these two parties played in 1896 can be found in <British Chess Magazine>, v16 n186, June 1896, pp247-248 and also in <Blackburne’s Games at Chess>, London, 1899, p93 (both sources give the game as being played on Feb 17, but both consultation games were played on Feb 14):

"Mr Pillsbury visited Hastings on Friday, and in the evening contested two consultation games, his opponents being Mr J. H. Blackburne and Mr Horace Chapman, and his partner, Mr H. E. Dobell. The result of the games was a victory and a draw in favour of Messrs Blackburne and Chapman."-<Swindon Advertiser>, 1896.02.22, p6

  Sally Simpson: Hi jinpope,

Yes wrong thread. I spotted the link to this game on the target thread, came here, got engrossed in the game and took note and a copy of the Pillsbury - Dobell zwischenzug.

White to play.

And of course posted in the wrong thread.

This zwischenzug reminded me off Uhlmann vs F Baumbach, 1964 (kibitz #1)

Those Pillsbury pdf's. Amazing piece of work.
