MissScarlett: Seems this game was played in 1873, not 1868, as it appears in the <ILN> of December 6th 1873, p.547 under the title <Chess In Manchester>. No more detail is given but Blackburne visited Manchester in November, and the correspondents' section acknowledges him with <Received, with thanks.>
Aug-27-21  Z truth 000000001: Not sure if that's 100% convincing. Suggestive sure, but we're lacking the "recently played" seal-of-approval, etc.

Any chance of getting the source with 1868?

MissScarlett: This game appears in the <ISDN> of December 12th 1885, p318, under the legend:

<CHESS IN AUSTRALIA.

A game played at Melbourne, 1885.>

The note to <20. Ng6>: <Come ye pawn-hunters, French "defencers," exchange-mongers, position-simplifiers, and here study, and copy if you can, real chess.>

It's also in the <Falkirk Herald> of September 24th 1924, p.4, with <This nice game was played at Manchester about the year 1868.>

1868 was a quiet year for Blackburne; he didn't undertake a tour of the country. But one can hardly rule out his being in Manchester.
