Jan-10-08  Phebas: You sit to play a game with the black pieces. Your challenger begins the game with "h3". What do you think? This game is mine! The concentration diminishes, and if you opponent play good moves, you´ll always think: "God, he is winning but he played "h3"! Hard to keep the focus.

Domdaniel: <Phebas> You may well be right: when I play 1.a3 or 2.a3 some quite strong players have tied themselves in knots trying to 'refute' it.

Yet at worst these 1.a3/1.h3 openings are like playing black with an extra move added -- the trick is to find a variation where the extra move is helpful.

This game, btw, is a nice combination of *both* h3 and a3/b4 systems. Classic Basmania.

Mar-17-09  TheTamale: You know Basman has something up his sleeve when he defers g4 until move 11. What I like about his wins is that he's not winning in spite of his openings; he's actually exploiting what little advantages they offer for the win.
